Chumash: Number of Words and Letters
I am trying to find out how many words are in the Torah. Short of counting by hand, can you help?
The Aish Rabbi Replies:
According to my concordance (Avraham Even Shoshan), here are the stats.
GENESIS: 12 parshas / 50 chapters / 1,534 verses / 20,512 words / 78,064 letters
EXODUS: 11 parshas / 40 chapters / 1,209 verses / 16,723 words / 63,529 letters
LEVITICUS: 10 parshas / 27 chapters / 859 verses / 11,950 words / 44,790 letters
NUMBERS 10 parshas / 36 chapters / 1,288 verses / 16,368 words / 63,530 letters
DEUTERONOMY 11 parshas / 34 chapters / 955 verses / 14,294 words / 54,892 letters
TOTAL: 54 parshas / 187 chapters / 5,845 verses / 79,847 words / 304,805 letters
Incidentally, Rabbi Even Shoshan wrote his concordance by hand, before the advent of computers! When there was a pogrom against the Jews, his work was destroyed. So he started from scratch and did it again.
