Don't underestimate protection

Not everything Lori says will always ring true for everyone, in the way it is intended. We are all in different spiritual places. For those seeking a closer relationship with G=d, weigh the importance of old high school friends (to whom you will always wish well) to the protection of your soul, which could be compromised. We must not become so self-righteous as to think that our humanness isn't constantly getting in our way, if it is not protected/guarded....and if we just ignore it and choose to do otherwise, that it will not creep into our consciousness. Build a fence. B"H, being an observant Jew is difficult enough, especially in galus, why risk what's most precious, by being exposed to earthly temptations? Build a fence. Lori's metaphor is spot on. Take joy in the fact that your memories of your past were sweet, but we are now on a different and more fulfilling path.... in our dedication to our partner, our family, our like-minded community, and above our Creator.

Not sure..

Not sure the fence metaphor is ringing the bell for me. In each example the fence isolates you a little more. Skip the reunion, deprives you and your friends of much joy in the name of avoiding an old flame. Maybe you should go, and have a metaphorical fence ready if you need it.
We have the opportunity to choose and make good decisions. When we choose to do right, it brings us closer to G-d. If we fence ourselves in, we are reducing our opportunity to live and spread joy. I can almost get on board, but the fence is a physical barrier and the donuts, old flame, gossip are all emotional cravings. Sometimes you need a fence, sometimes you need just be aware.
