11/27/2006 10:11:00 AM chanuka gifts
in the cartoon, the adult character explained to the child that Chanuka gifts to children " so that they would feel left out next to their christian neighbors>" The Sages explain that "gelt" was given to the children on Chanuka as an incentive for the children to coninue with their "Chinuch", education, which is what the Macabbees fought for. I"ll admit that gift giving which was once exclusive to the children is now given to anyone, copying Christmas, but what is your source of that statemenet in the cartoon, that the origins of giving gifts to childern is to copy Christma?

I work on cruise ships and host the chanukah celebration and lighting the menorah since their is no one their to host that is Jewish. I love the fact that you see so many Jews come out and celebrate even whille being at sea! These pages and songs help me make a package for the guests so we can sing and celebrate whille at sea!

12/17/2003 sweet memories
Thanks a lot for your chanuka site. I am old and living isolated from any Jewish community and your site give me a deep yearning for the days, many decades ago, that I lived a real Jewish life. Thanks again!

12/16/2003 Hannukah, a special occassion
It is a great article, specially for children or people who keep themselves away from judaism. It explains in simple ways the reason and meaning of Hannukah.
