Hello. You know it's almost Chanukah, and soon we'll be lighting our candles! I thought it was a good time to tell the children about the dangers of fire. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Well, Rabbi Alter, I'm so glad you called! First of all, please tell the children to be extra careful how they light the candles. And most of all, they shouldn't even go near any fire without adult supervision!

It's Chanukah at last
So children let's ask
Some questions on this most important time of year.

You don't have to raise your hand
You won't disturb the band
Just call out the answers so everyone can hear.

When do we light? Can anybody say?
When the sun sets and signals the end of the day.

When do others light? Come, let me hear you say
When the stars do appear in their beautiful array.

What do we light? Who can answer that?
Wicks in olive oil or candles made of wax.

Where do we light? Who can say for sure?
Some light by the window, some light by the door.

And in Eretz Yisroel many people light outside
Where the lights are seen by the people passing by.

And how many candles are we supposed to light
We start with one and add another candle every night.

Each time, which is the first candle that we light?
We start with the candle that we added on tonight.

By the Menorah's eight lights may I write with my pen?
No! Ein Lanu Reshus Lehishtameish Bahem
By the light may I write, please tell me once again
V'ein Lanu Reshus - we do not use them!

The reason that we light these candles you know
Is to remember the miracles that happened long ago
And when we remember what do we do then?
We thank and we praise the name of Hashem.

And the name of the flame
With which we light all the rest
Is the Shamesh that we place above
Or to the right or left.

And what brochos (blessings) do we say?
Let's hear it, children
Lehadlik Ner and She'oso Nissim.

And on the first night
In addition to these two
We make another brocho, Shehecheyanu.

How much time must they be lit
Let me hear you loud and strong
After the stars appear for
At least a half an hour long.

Two times a year we say a special tefilla (prayer)
Al Hanissim!! On Purim ! And also Chanukah
On Chanukah we say Al Hanissim every day
When we bentch and when we daven Shemono Esrei.

You told me all the answers
Indeed you're chachomim (wise men).

 IN THE TEMPLE

Hi everyone and welcome.

Well, Chanukah is finally here. Let's begin by closing our eyes and imagining that we are living in the time of the Temple. Wow! Here it is. What a beautiful building. Gold and silver and precious jewels are all around.

And children, still with our eyes closed tightly, we see the kohanim - the priests - in their special clothing, doing their holy tasks with so much love and care. A kohein is lighting the golden beautiful Menorah - candelabra. The wicks are glowing in their cups filled with pure olive oil. How beautiful it was. If only we could once again see this magnificent sight.

One time when the Temple was standing, do you know what happened, children?

Come, let's slowly open our eyes and talk about it softly...

 THE BEIS HAMIKDASH: THE TEMPLE

In the Beis Hamikdash long ago
The beautiful Menorah lights would glow
With olive oil they burned throughout the night
To show to all the Torah way of life.

Then once the wicked Yevanim came
They broke through walls, they put out the flame
And when the Kohanim (priests) finally returned
They found no real pure oil left to burn.

Just then someone cried out "I found a flask!"
For one whole night this little jug will last
Then came a miracle, oh so great
Instead of just one night, it lasted eight.

I work in a secular special education school. It was a pleasure not only finding the lyrics, but also sharing the melody with the music teacher
It was a pleasure finding basic hanukah songs with the lyrics and music. Working in a secular special education environment exposed the population to another heritage.

new media to revive old style chanukah
So nice to find chanukah songs in a "nowdays" media. Internet, being in the web, is so important to my children, and we got connected for hours singing together as my parents used to sing with us. Did their parents and grandparents sing the same way? This is what makes traddition. We can't talk too much now. We are in a hurry. We are going to make our home candles and it means a lot of work and a lot of family time together. Thanks is a wonderful word, isn't it?

I love all these traditional melodies and my children and I enjoy singing them for the eight days of Hannukah. We love to gather around the Menorah and as my youngest son lights the candle, we sing these lovely traditional songs.
