Why You Should Quit Social Media

Debunking the common arguments against leaving social media.

Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable.

I gave up facebook years ago, have no social media, and I absolutely love it. I have a laptop though, which is how I'm able to STILL READ AISH articles, and even comment on them. My kids don't see me checking my phone every few minutes and I have so much wonderful breathing space without notifications and distractions. It truly was one of the best decisions I've made thank Gd.

You propose giving up social media which seems a bit dense how would I read Aish type this comment and keep abreast of Jewsish Affairs

How did you read aish.com before Facebook?

And how am I reading it now without Facebook?

P.S. I'm grateful I can comment on aish.com without having a Facebook account. Many news outlets don't afford me that capability.

This is real food for thought. Not ready to give up FB but certainly hear some bells ringing to limit my time so I can focus on things I want to accomplish.... I also am thinking about my grandkids and how they are impacted probably more than I am...

Wow

That was a tremendous talk, thanks so much. So many good points and so clear and simply expressed by a sincere man.
