How to make the most of the 2011 heat wave without moving from your computer or air conditioner.

With record-breaking heat pushing thermometers over 100 degrees across the United States, many are stuck inside wondering “What can I do?”

Well, here are five spiritual ways to make the most of the 2011 heat wave without moving from your computer or air conditioner.

1. Get a Jewish ebook – This is a great time to introduce yourself to the world of Jewish ebooks. There is a new site www.Jewish-e-books.com, featuring hundreds of books including Aish.com’s own Triumph: Inspiring True Stories of Challenge and Spiritual Growth.

Artscroll, the premier Jewish publishing house now offers many popular titles in the ebook format. Check it out at: http://www.artscroll.com/ebooks.

Download one today and see why we are the people of the ebook.

2. Listen to a class from AishAudio.com - Turn up the speakers or slip on your headphones and listen to one or two inspiring classes from AishAudio.com. AishAudio offers 1000’s of classes on a wide range of topics. Speakers include some of Aish.com’s most popular writers like Rabbi Noah Weinberg, obm, Lori Palatnik, Ken Spiro, and Rabbi Zelig Pliskin. There’s certainly something there to inspire you.

Visit the site at: http://www.aishaudio.com.

3. Start Preparing for the High Holidays – “But it’s only July. It’s too early for the High Holidays.” Not true. If you were going on a vacation you’d be getting ready months in advance. There airplane tickets, hotel reservations, rental cars and googling tourist attractions. The more prepared you are, the better chance you and your family have for a successful and happy vacation.

The High Holidays are no different. If you want to get the most out of them, you need to prepare. Otherwise you may end up on Rosh Hashana wondering “What’s this all about?”

Take some time now and visit Aish.com’s High Holiday Site featuring insights, videos children’s activities, recipes and much more.

With a little preparation this might be your most meaningful High Holiday season ever.

4. Appreciate the heat – Take a look at the thermometer. What’s the temperature? Jot it down. Now, think of one person in your life who you’d like to appreciate just a little bit more. Maybe it’s a spouse, a parent, a child, a teacher a co-worker or a neighbor. Whoever it is, make a list of reasons you have to be thankful and appreciative of that person. Make your list as long as the number of degrees. If it’s 99 degrees, make 99 reasons. (If that sounds impossible, at least do it in Celsius!)

Here is an example I did using this technique for my mother’s 80th birthday.

No matter whom you choose, this is guaranteed to improve your relationship and have you thankful for the heat.

5. Think about Aliyah – Whether you’ve thought about Israel becoming your home previously or the idea never entered your mind. This is a great time to delve into the idea a little more.

Nefesh b’Nefesh is a tremendous resource for learning about Aliyah and seeing what options and opportunities are available.

We also have a section on Aish.com with inspiring person stories and diaries of peoples’ Aliyah and Israel experiences http://www.aish.com/jw/id/

I won’t guarantee that that it will be any cooler in Israel, but it is our home.

Hopefully one of these ideas will give you a nice spiritual break from the heat. If you have other ideas, feel free to share them in the comments section below.
