Talapia: Something Fishy!

Tasty recipes for a versatile fish. Try it this week.


Fish is an important part of my menu and even though many people are not so fond of fish, somehow I get compliments. My secret:

  • Avoid bones. People not accustomed to eating fish are really bothered by bones.
  • Don’t overcook the fish. When it’s done, get it out of the oven and on the serving plate.
  • Use interesting flavors. Fish is very flexible. Flavor it with whatever you like.

Talapia is a great fish, nice small tasty fillets. Try it during The Nine Days.

Teriyaki Talapia


  • 4 tbsp. vinegar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp. soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. corn starch dissolved in 2 tbsp. cold water
  • 1 tbsp. garlic crushed – optional
  • 1 tbsp. ginger, powdered – optional
  • 4 talapia fillets

Combine vinegar, brown sugar, soy sauce and corn starch dissolved in water. Place in sauce pan, medium heat, add garlic and ginger. Whisk 20 minutes.

Place tilapia on baking paper, on baking tray. Spoon over sauce. Preheat oven 200ºF. Bake for twenty minutes.

Remove to serving tray. Sprinkle with green (green onions, parsley or cilantro) and serve.

Lemon Garlic Talapia

  • 4 talapia fillets
  • 3 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp. margarine or butter
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed or chopped
  • 1 tsp. fresh parsley, chopped
  • Crushed pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375ºF. Place baking paper on baking tray. Place fillets on baking tray. Pour lemon juice over fillets. Drizzle butter or margarine on top. Sprinkle with garlic, parsley and pepper. Bake in oven about 20 minutes.


Talapia Fish Cakes

  • 4 6-oz. fillets tilapia
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp. fresh chopped dill
  • 1 tbsp. mustard
  • ¾ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 ½ tbsp. vinegar

Preheat oven to 400ºF. Place tilapia on baking paper on a baking sheet. Season with ¾ tsp. salt and ¼ tsp. pepper. Bake until cooked through – 12 minutes. Let cook and flake.

In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, eggs, dill and 1 tbsp. mustard. Fold in fish and bread crumbs. Form 8 cakes.

Heat oil and cook cakes until golden, 3 minutes on each side. Drain on a paper towel.


Talapia Taco with Pickle Relish

  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • 4 talapia fillets
  • 1 tsp. fresh cilantro
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper, crushed
  • 1 large pickle, sliced
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 8 tortillas
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 6 radishes, sliced

Preheat oven to 200ºF. Place fillets on baking tray with baking paper. Season tilapia with ½ tsp. salt, ¼ tsp. pepper and ¼ cup chopped cilantro. Bake for 20 minutes.

In a bowl, toss pickle, radishes, lemon juice, oil and pepper. Serve the tilapia in the tortilla with relish, cilantro and mayonnaise.

comment and clarification

Two things...first my comment...where you posted "Avoid bones. People not accustomed to eating fish are really bothered by bones" one in his right mind is not bothered by bones in his/her fish, not just people who don't eat it often. Now for my your recipe for Teriyaki Tilapia you list vinegar as an ingredient...what type of vinegar do you suggest? and please don't respond with whatever type i prefer. Thank you in advance.

Talapia is mostly farm raised. Usually farmed fish is given lots of antibiotics and lives in dirty water. I personally would not eat any fish that is farm raised. Check it out for yourselves.

spelling and variety

Interesting selection of recipes.Hake or any white fish should be equally suitable. Btw: tIlapia non tAlapia. LOL!

Tilapia cooked in the microwave

I cook all my fish in the microwave. They come out juicy moist and delicious Wash the fish, rub either orange juice or lemon all over the fillets. Add chopped green and red pepper, tomatoes, shallots, garlic, add a dollop of harissa and a couple of tbsps of chicken broth. Cover and nuke for approx 5 to 9 mins depending on amount. Bon appetit!
