positive reinforcement
It's better to tell a child, "if you don't do this, you will be rewarded" instead of saying "if you do that, you will get no reward." As for yelling, it is certainly authoritative, but it can result in a child hiding and repressing his/her emotions similarly to spanking. Parenting involves a lot of consistency in discipline and reward upon the child's self-reliance such as working hard and following through on necessary expectations.

It does not work
I have applied this technique and my child grew even more despondent. Losing his privileges more and more, and making me grow thin of ideas what to chose as a mildly annoying consequence (that would not make ME totally annoyed to have to deal with either).

It tought me to become more and more angry - because it tought me that I was not a good educator and simply incapable of implementing such an "easy" simple rule.

I do not know why my child is that despondent.
