He is speaking way too fast for someone to understand what he is saying. It is not clear. If someone is not knowledgeable on the subject they will not understand.

Why not mention the more "modern" disasters as well?!

The fate of Judaism in Spain and WWII, just to mention two that also the less / not yet religious can connect to and that are very good reasons for this day of mourning. As well as a sign that we'd better not lose sight of what's important, even in "modern" times.
