Correction: The Shamash
The Hanukka lights are sacred. Their sole purpose must be to commemorate the miracle, and thus we are not permitted to make any use of them or derive any benefit from them "lest one slight the mitsva." The shamash is an additional, non-sacred, usable light placed near the Hanukka lights. Its purpose is to serve as a precaution against inadvertent use of the Hanukka lights: Any such incidental use of light in the area of the hanukkiya can be credited to the nearby shamash. Further, if there is a "blazing hearth filre" in the room, a shamash is not required, as it is clear that the light being used to see is not the menorah lights! (Talmud Shabbat 21b; Shulhan Arukh, Mishna Brura, and Beur Halakha, Orah Hayyim 671:5, 673:1).
Thus, the real purpose of the shamash is not--as is commonly believed-- to light the other lights. Indeed, according to halacha (Jewish law), literally anything may be used for this purpose!

The replica outside of Aish is not solid gold, it's gold plated.
December 10, 2012 10:40 PM
I don't that this is correct. It's a solid piece of gold, made out of one piece just like it was in the beit hamikdash.

i am still asked
what a nice story,"but you still celebrate Christmas too, dont you?"and have a tree?"........
December 10, 2012 4:09 PM
Informed, religious Jews would never celebrate Christmas. Christmas - orginially Christ Mass - celebrates the birth of Jesus as "God's Only Son" - something we don't believe at all. ALL people are God's children, not one more than the other. (You can also see the article "Why Jews Don't Believe in Jesus" on this websitefor other reasons we don't celebrate Christmas.)

I have known of this for many years. It's nice that we have it on the internet so people of different cultures can learn. It's ignorance of religions and cultures that make people afraid of different religions and cultures.
