1940 -- The adult euthanasia program, "The Reich Work Group of Sanatoriums and Nursing Homes," known as "T4," becomes systemized with the inventory and subsequent gassing of Jewish mental patients.
January 24, 1940 -- The Naval Secretary notifies Secretary of War Henry Stimson, "Hostilities would be initiated by a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor." January 1940 -- First underground activities by Jewish Youth movements in Poland. New Year's Day, 1940 -- Tennessee takes on Southern California in the Rose Bowl.
February 8, 1940 -- Germans set up the Lodz ghetto. 31,721 rooms contain more than 160,000 Jews by May 1.

February 12, 1940 -- First deportation of Jews from Germany to Poland.

February 20, 1940 -- German physicist Werner Heisenberg sends secret report on the possibility of getting energy from splitting uranium.

April 9, 1940 -- Germany Army occupies Denmark and Southern Norway. Copenhagen and Oslo are taken. April 27, 1940 -- Himmler issues directive to establish a concentration camp at Auschwitz.

April 30, 1940 -- The Lodz ghetto is sealed. 230,000 people in 1.6 square miles.

April 1940 -- Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians pitches his first no-hitter on opening day.

May 10, 1940 -- Massive German invasion of Holland, Belgium and France begins.

May 18, 1940 -- Nazis pierce French lines on 62-mile front.

May 22, 1940 -- Nazis at Channel trap the Allies at Belgium.

May 1, 1940 -- Rudolf Hoess is appointed Kommandant of Auschwitz.

May 20, 1940 -- Concentration camp is established at Auschwitz.

May 10, 1940 -- Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister of England.

June 4, 1940 -- Evacuation of British Army from Dunkirk is completed.

June 22, 1940 -- French Army surrenders. Marshall Petain signs armistice with Germany.

June 26, 1940 -- Hundreds of Kovno Jews are taken to the "Ninth Fort" and murdered.

June 27, 1940 -- 800 Jews are burned alive inside Great Synagogue. 1,200 others die in shooting.

June 1940 -- The Pan American Yankee Clipper flies from New York to Lisbon in a record of eighteen-and -a -half hours
July 17, 1940 -- Vichy government initiates anti-Jewish measures in France.
August 1, 1940. First expulsion from Cracow.

August 10, 1940 -- Anti-Jewish laws are passed in Romania.

August 25, 1940 -- First "parachute wedding."
September 7, 1940 -- Massive German bombing attack on London begins.

September 27, 1940 -- Tripautate Pact establishes Berlin-Tokyo-Rome Axis.

September 5, 1940 -- All 355 Jewish-owned businesses in Luxembourg become "Aryan" property. September 1940- McDonalds is started by Pasadena movie owners, Richard and Maurice McDonald.
October 7, 1940 -- Germany invades Romania.

October 3, 1940 -- Anti-Jewish laws are passed by the Vichy government.

October 16, 1940 -- Warsaw Ghetto is established.

October 1940 -- The Cincinnati Red Legs of the National League claim the World Series championship with a decisive seventh game win.
November 20, 1940 -- Hungary, Rumania, and Slovakia join Axis. November 15, 1940 -- The Warsaw Ghetto is sealed off, ultimately containing 500,000 Jews. November 6, 1940 -- Roosevelt is elected President. Democrats keep House control.

November 13, 1940 -- Walt Disney's "Fantasia" opens in New York.

December 1940 -- Karl Pabst designs the jeep.
