January 21, 1941 -- Anti-Jewish riots take place in Romania. Gangs of Romanian Legionnaires hunt for Jews, loot and beat Jews in the street, desecrate 25 synagogues, destroy hundreds of homes and shops, and butcher hundreds of Jews.
February 12, 1941 -- A British policeman with blood poisoning is the first person treated successfully with penicillin.

February 23, 1941 -- University of California (Berkeley) scientist discovers that plutonium is produced by the decomposition of the artificial element neptunium.

March 2, 1941 -- Germany occupies Bulgaria March 1941 -- Adolf Eichmann is appointed head of the Gestapo Department of Jewish Affairs. March 1941 -- John Ford's "How Green Was My Valley" wins Academy Awards: Best Picture and Best Director. Best Actor award goes to Gary Cooper for "Sergeant York."
April 6, 1941 -- German army invades Yugoslovia and Greece. April 1941 -- RCA demonstrates a new simplified electron microscope that magnifies up to 100,000 times.
May 16, 1941 -- French Marshall Petain declares over the radio an official policy of collaboration with Hitler. May 14, 1941 -- 3,600 Jews are arrested in Paris.

May 15, 1941 -- Romania passes law condemning Jews to forced labor.

May 2, 1941 -- Anti-British revolt, encouraged by Germany, takes place in Iraq.
June 7, 1941 -- Palmach units take part in an Allied invasion in Syria.

June 22, 1941 -- "Operation Barbarossa," German invasion of the U.S.S.R., is launched.

June 1941 -- Germany invades the Soviet Union, and begins implementing the third phase of the "Final Solution."

June 1941 -- Vichy government revokes civil rights of French Jews in North Africa and decrees many restrictions.

June 1941 -- Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing squads) start conducting mass executions of Jews in German-occupied Soviet territory.

June 29, 1941 -- Romanian troops go on a killing spree in Jassy, killing 10,000 Romanian Jews.

June 1941 -- New rules in U.S. government cut refugee immigration to about 25% of relevant quotas.
July 12, 1941 -- Military treaty is signed between U.S.S.R. and Britain.

July 17, 1941 -- Alfred Rosenberg is appointed administrator of all territory seized from Russia.

July 7, 1941 -- Einsatzkommando 3 begins the systematic slaughter of Lithuanian Jewry. Ultimately, 70,000-100,000 Jews are shot in forests near Vilna.

July 25, 1941 -- Lithuanians stage a pogrom in Kovno, killing 3,800 Jews.

July 31, 1941 -- Heydrich is appointed by Goering to carry out the Final Solution.




July 1941 -- Cary Grant donates his entire $137,500 salary from "Arsenic and Old Lace" to the British War Relief.
August 1941 -- The T4 program for adults ostensibly ceases. August 12, 1941 -- Sikorski-Stalin Polish-Russian agreement allows many Polish Jews to be freed for Siberian labor camp.
September 1, 1941 -- Jews in all of the Third Reich are required to wear the yellow Star of David.

September 23, 1941 -- First gassing experiments are made at Auschwitz.

September 27, 1941 -- 33,771 Jews are killed by Germans and Ukranians at Babi Yar outside Kiev.

September 2, 1921 -- First Miss America contest held in Atlantic City, has 8 entries.
October 12, 1941 -- Germans approach Moscow, partial evacuation of the city. October 1941 -- Auschwitz II, known as Birkenau, is established.

October 10, 1941 -- Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia is established.

October 5, 1941 -- Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis dies.

October 16, 1941 -- General Hideki Tojo takes over as Japanese Premier.


December 7, 1941 -- Japanese attack U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor.

December 9, 1941 -- U.S. declares war; Pacific battle widens.

December 11, 1941 -- Germany and Italy declare war on the U.S.

December 1941 -- Armed underground organization is established in the Minsk ghetto. First Jewish partisan group operates there.
