The Secret to Giving
Mrs. Rachel Rosenberg was a wealthy widow and philanthropist who was a target of many people seeking tzedakah. And Mrs. Rosenberg was indeed very generous, but interestingly, she never answered the door for solicitors herself. Instead she would have one of her housekeepers answer the door and give a donation.
Given the circumstances, the housekeeper was quite surprised to see, that after a man showed up at the door with the proclamation, “I haven’t eaten anything in two days”, that Mrs. Rosenberg insisted on seeing him.
“What did she ask you?” the housekeeper asked the man as he exited her office. “I don’t know…I’m confused…”, he replied, “…she wanted to know what my secret was.”
