Chaim Yankel Sherman had gone to propose to his girlfriend and returned home crying bitterly. "What happened, Chaim Yankel?" his father asked. "Did she not accept?"
"No, she sure didn't," sobbed Chaim Yankel.
“Did you tell her what I told you to say?” asked Mr. Sherman.
“Yes!” said Chaim Yankel.
“She said no to a Sherman?! What happened?” asked Mr. Sherman.
“She slapped my face and told me to get out!"
“Oy vey!” said Mr. Sherman. “I don’t understand, didn’t you tell her what I told you to say, what I told your mother when she accepted my proposal? 'Time stands still when I look in your eyes.' Did you tell her that?"
"Oy, I think I got it all mixed up,” said Chaim Yankel.
“Nu, so what did you say?” asked Mr. Sherman.
"I said, 'You have a face that would stop a clock!'"
