One day a Jewish man wakes up late for a new job interview. He quickly takes a shower, eats breakfast, and gets into his car. When he finally gets there, he can't find any parking places. He looks and looks, but he just doesn't find one. Finally he prays to God and says, "God if you find me a parking spot, I'll go to synagogue every Saturday morning and I will never lie again."

Two minutes later, he finds a parking spot out of the blue and says, "Never mind God. I found one!"

Commentary:

This joke plays on the generally human, but specifically Jewish character trait to reach out when in need. As the saying goes, "There are no atheists in a foxhole" and so, even the most a-spiritual Jew will call out in prayer when he or she is in need. Unfortunately, the joke also highlights another Jewish stereotype, which is that we are stubborn and quick to forget. Indeed, many times the Bible castigates us for being a "stiff necked people." We call out for Divine assistance when we are in need, but when our prayers have been answered, we are quick to conclude that it was by our own strength, ingenuity, or luck that gave us the kind of space that would make a valet jealous. So, next time you are looking for a parking spot and ask for some Divine assistance, don't make any promises you can’t keep. It won't bode well for your "parking karma."
