There once was a very rich Jewish man who owned a large estate. He had not been to synagogue in a long time so the Rabbi came to visit him. Upon arriving the Rabbi noticed there was no mezuzahs anywhere on the estate and pointed this out to his host. After the visit, the man having decided to invest more time in his faith decided to indeed attach mezuzahs all over his property as the Rabbi had recommended. He traveled to Israel where he purchased 50 hand crafted mezuzahs at great expense.

When he returned, he decided that it would be too much work to hang them all himself so he asked his groundskeeper to do it for him.

Several weeks passed by and the Rabbi returned again. Upon coming to the front gate he was impressed by the sight of a mezuzah. He decided to look inside, but upon opening the case, the Rabbi noticed that there was nothing there. The Rabbi asks the man "Why did you remove the holy scrolls from all these beautiful cases?"

The man became angry and summoned his gardener to find out why he had removed the scrolls.

The old gardener responded, "What's the matter I hung them exactly the way you told me to."

The man replied, "What happened to the scrolls on the inside?"

The old said, "What the instructions? I couldn't read them so I just threw them all away."
