Mendel was out walking on evening when he saw a man about to jump into the river. "Wait!" he shouted. "What are you doing?"

"Never mind," the man replied. "I'm just fed up with my life. I can't go on living."

"Look mister," said Mendel. 'I don't want to tell you how to run your life, but if you jump into the river, I would have to jump in after you and try to rescue you. But I can't swim. Can you imagine what would become of my wife and kids if I drowned? Could you live with that on your conscience? Please, do me a favor: be a good Jew and go home. And later tonight, in the privacy of your own house, you can do whatever you want."
