Thats a GOOD way to get class control!

That was funny!! Yeah... But hey, you never know what he did the next day. Once he gets the class on his side they'l listen to him. Y'know if students would only know that teachers care about them too not only the grades per c.. then they will be able to internalize and understand the message that the emphasis on marks or the learning is for their own good!! Class control depends on if you GOT THEM at the beginning of the year... G'luck to all the teachers out there.. And hey, I cant wait to say that to my class: RECESS ALL DAY>> LETS PARTY!!

Definately! It's a backwards system though. All the teachers ever threaten to do is to take points off. But the students also put emphasis on grades too much, it's like do we need to know this for the test cuz if we don't why do I need to listen.

YES

the gold stars is nice it gives the kids something to strive for but the demerits is not important to hang up so every kid could see. thats humiliating and once a kid sees he has the most black circles hell make a game out of that and dive deeper and deeper and his friends will follow.

Yes, schools place too much emphasis on grades...not enough on Learning. Grades are important, but learning and applying is vital.

Okay, so this clip was so extreme in either direction that it didn't say much of anything. But I know that the school that I attended didn't teach me half as much as what I learned when I got out. Would that I had learned how to LIVE, and not to just get by....

Look, I'm a kid. A regular kid who loves recess and stares at the clock most of the day, waiting for 3:45 when school/jail will end.But the truth is, although it may not show, all of us kids know we need school. If someone said to me:"heres the deal, you could drop out of school if you want. its up to you" I would say that I would rather stay in school. if someone told me i could stop learning math (the worst subject in the world in my opinion) i would still say no. this is becuase deep down, I know i'll need this in life. I think to myself "Hey, why is history so important? why do I care if i get an A on a test that asks what George Washington's favorite meal was??" well I may not need it but what if when I'm older my kids need help with History homework and I cant help them with that? I mean that would be ssssoooooo embarrassing!! My friend goes to a school with no grades or homework, at first that seems so exciting but in reality its terrible. without grades how can you get into a good collage, seminary, or Yeshiva? whith out homework in elementry how are they gonna do all those long hours of studying in high school? They also have no tests there. How will these kids be prepared for when they are older???? thats the truth you get once you think about it. I dont think too much work is good but some definitaly is needed. So i think that a good Balance is what every school needs.

evil inclination

This is an excellent parable for the evil inclination. We think that freedom means not having rules and giving into desires. But really we feel empty and insecure without guidelines. The Torah and Mitzvos are the loving positive teacher and the outside world without Torah guiding us is the substitute that may look so inticing but really makes you feel vulnerable, scared, and insecure.

recess and grades

I'm retired teacher and watched the changes through the years with emphasis on grades and pushing kids harder especially now. My grandkids are all being pushed so much harder to make "the grade" at the expense of recess and just having fun moments. We wonder why we have "obese" people especially our children growing up but much is due to the fact that they do not have recess and then their homework is so much that they rarely have a break from it even at home. I feel kids need to be kids and have some play time to become more rounded. But also on the other end of being a teacher, there are parents who allow their kids to idly watch tv or play video games rather than get the needed outdoor recreation time they really need. I've watch children's creativity slowly dwindle away because they aren't given time and the incentive to explore their world and learn to "make-do" with just play time. And there are parents who insist that their child gets ahead in life so they push them to be the best in everything. Are we only building more stress into the child's life by doing this. When I questioned our administration that schools now seem to push students more to make the grade, I was told that high schools today in America are really preparing all students to go to college. Many many wind up falling through the cracks who would do better if more schools had "trades" they really taught to these. Not all are college material and we need to provide for these too.

Yes

Emphasis should be placed on learning and tests can be used to evaluate the level of learning. Unfortunately they are used to produce grades which are often arbitrary and dependent on the degree of difficulty. An improvement to the system commonly used is to allow students to review material that they tested low and then retest until they improve their grades. Obviously grades are needed for placement into schools of higher learning but they are too often used to compare students with each other. Class participation grades is an example of grading up the first students to raise their hands (often without having sufficiently thought through the question) while more thoughtful students could be graded down. Grading may be necessary for a variety of reasons but should not be the primary emphasis. The primary emphasis should be placed on learning and development.

Too many media offerings show children mocking the system, showing up their parents, and generally doing what they think best. And, surprise! - they all become brain surgeons anyway! The reality is that too many children graduate, or otherwise leave school knowing nothing but expecting everything. Grades may not be the only indicator of learning, but for the most part those who know the subject will get better grades, and those that get bad grades cannot be relied upon later when knowledge of the subject is required.

Should They Use a Tape measurer For the Long Jump?

When I was in school the grade system was a way of mesuring how you were doing in school.It also was a way for your parents to see how you were doing. As time progressed and the 70s hit people started worrying more about the feelings of children who didn't mesure up to the watermark set by the powers at be. Then the system started making adjustment to make everybody get good grades. In high school they had track A-B&C, I was in track-A this was a regents class, I was put there by my guidence counselor, I worked hard but despite my efforts I was only a "B" student.Some kids in school were track-C and earned A's & B's and didn't work as much. Now when you look how crazy this "affirative action" style grade system is ,you don't have to look long to see that it made "A" students out of "C" students and and on the high side"B" students out of"A"students. Why? I guess it was to make kids feel better about themselves.The bad thing that happened is we have ended up with undetermined grades on a page and we don't really know how smart these kids are. We home school are daughter, we could do what the public schools have done and make her an "A" student ,no matter what, but we have to live with those false grades looming in our minds.I am all for making children feel good about themselves but not having away to mesure their progress is no way of doing that. God gives each child a talent,gift or vision we should build on that and not neccesarily on what we want them to be.Lastly ,I know this substitute teacher is an actor but do you think he is making the "A"students feel bad to make the "B"students feel good? We should never bash people who are successful at learning. YIKES!how would a substitute like him slip in through the cracks?

Too much Emphasis

I do think that schools often do put too much emphasis on grades. Children have so much to offer. Some kids do not have the same abilities to succeed in school as others, they may not be good at taking various kinds of tests or may have different ways that they learn material better. Not to mention the fact that when schools have girls and boys together, that takes away some of their ability to concentrate fully and they do not learn in the same ways or develop at the same speeds mentally. Although, grades can be good in the aspect of giving children goals to push for, something to aim for. I think what should be emphasized more is that everyone has specific gifts and struggles, unique to that person.

I think there should be a balance between recess and class time. They shouldn't always have recess. However, there are some schools in general that don't give them enough. They think that the best way is to cram in as much class time as possible. However, doing that is counter-productive because if they don't let them release their energy, they won't be able to concentrate and learn.
