Is the stereotype of "tough" Jewish women accurate?

This video encourages the discussion of Jewish values as they relate to contemporary culture. Jewlarious does not endorse any particular film.

Gratitude issues.

Stolen time: can't be bought or returned. This woman is behaving this way has nothing to do , at heart, with issues of ethnicity. She needs to know that she is honored in her community. The problem is about spiritual thirsting: the older j. woman simply feels she hasn't been remembered properly. Mgr. needs to call a seniors appreciation day. Simple.

Strong women are the secret to a society's survival

Have a little respect. How come we are all here today? There was some tough, smart lady who protected her young and made do with very little. Kudos to grandmas everywhere!

How about respecting your elders.

Aren't we all missing the big picture? Here is a sweet old bubby who is just trying to save some gelt so she can afford to buy her grandchildren a pack of long johns for Chanukah. Have some respect!

Cheap?

Cheap is not he word for this... it is more like JERK. The price is the price either pay it or move on. To try to JERK the manager around for an hour ove fifty cents is worse than using a handgun to STEAL from him. At least the robber is honest about his actions.

relax

Black, Hispanic old grandmas can all be the same with regards to this. Jewish Bobbies have their own special way while other groups have theirs Don't tell me you never negotiated either. Ok so you negotiated $1 instead of fifty cents. If the manager gives in more power to the Bubby. Oh, and BTW, if you are in a rush don't get stuck behind any Bubby, Black or Jewish. Also: Your display of intolerance makes you the biggest Jerk. Its just comedy.

No Problem!

It may be irritating to some, but trying to get a good deal or a fair deal is admirable. Also, in some cases it may be driven by having experienced poverty.

So what's wrong with being cheap?

(5) Anonymous, November 24, 2009 8:18 PM

No!!!!

I don't think you can generalize like that. I don't think that there is any correlation between being Jewish and being cheap. My mother-in-law (not Jewish) is the cheapest woman I know. But this is because she has lived through some very tough times. I think people who are cheap have become that way through difficult life experience.

Not tough, cheap

This is pinch-penny behavior, which, incidentally, is not limited to any age or religion or ethnicity. I speak from experience as a retail cashier. The best way to handle the situation is to keep smiling and not take any of it personally.

Jews no the true value of money

Jew are not cheap - we are careful with our money. We know that hte true value of money is its ability to be used for Torah, for mitzvos, for chesed. The butcher in my community gives away 300 free chickens each Friday afternoon. Kupas Ezra gives out $2.3 million dollars each year to local poor. On the Wednesday evening after the start of the YomKipuur War, in a single evening, when eretz Yisrael needed money, we raised $400 million dollars! Don't you dare tell me Jews are cheap!

Baal Tashchit

Jews are encouraged to be frugal. It is a Jewish value. We are not supposed to waste or destroy anything, including money. And we have to be strong and courageous when we try to implement our values. Its not cheap, its frugal and thrifty. Its being thoughtful and not wasteful. It not tough, its courageous.

Cheap = Tough?

I never knew the two words were synonymous.
