He's funny but sadly absolutely right! People are becoming zombies whose whole life is governed by a silly little machine. Let's talk to EACH OTHER in real for a change, please.

Has Technology made us rude?

Naw, it wasn't technology. Folks have always been rude, now they just have more ways to show it. People used to tune others out and say uh huh occassionally, when a boring person was talking. Their mind would wander to other thoughts. Now with technology, they check their phones instead of letting their minds wander.. They don't really use their minds any more. Meh.

This is definitely a strong message. I do agree 100% that technology has influenced society to be anti-social to the extent of rudeness, but I also think that technology isn't the core of the problem; it's that ppl are lacking basic social skills too, and that could be because their parents, friends or siblings are doing the same thing. Let us hope that,eventually, ppl will acquire an awareness of the present situation and raise their children accordingly.

we don't have these phones

My family and I and all our neighbors and friends, and our entire community have simple "kosher" phones with the hecksher of the rabbanim, no Internet, no problems. Simply a phone, to receive and make calls. Like in the "old days" ( last year. ) Try it. Your quality of life will improve on all levels.

there were no kids on seinfeld and all characters were unmarried. seinfeld is partly responsible for convincing jewish liberals to stop marrying and having kids

It's not about the technology

It's not about the technology, it's about human behaviour. Saying that technology makes people rude is a copout. People need to take responsibility for their own actions and not blame them on whatever the popular thing of the moment is. Now it's Blackberries. Before it was computers, or TV, or Rock & Roll, etc. It's always the fault of some external force. It makes for funny jokes, but it puts the spotlight in on the wrong thing. The common thread throughout is human beings behaving however they behave.

my response to the rudeness

thanx, it expresses my frustration with this situation also, until I learned to ask, "would you mind turning it off in order to havel a conversation?" After they turn it off they say, "now what do you have to say that's so important? "By then the thoughts either slipped my mind or I'm so exasperated with the response, that I say forget it and don't attempt to have a relationship w/this rude individual. Many others I know turn it off graciously.

A message to a world consumed by technology.....

Although technology definitely has its' place, certain people have not learned how to use the technology so that they are not rude to others around them. Although the analogy is a bit extreme, it is similar to the "do guns kill people, or do people kill people" argument. The technology can be used properly, but certain people have allowed theirself to become rude, usually unknowingly, in their use of the technology. People who have become rude using their Blackberry, as an example, do not intentionally mean to be rude. But rude they are nonetheless. Seinfeld said it perfectly when he riffed, can I just hold up a magazine in your face while we talk. Such behavior is basically the same thing. There is a time and place for everything.
