consciousness is selfish.
He didn't care about the tree until it started affecting his well being, suddenly the life of the tree mattered. That is the way we should look at nature, if it dies we die, that is a fact.

Sorry, all out of trees
Never going to happen in "real" life.
There wouldn't be any free will.
or, Maybe the tree only sheds leaves when his words aren't "meaningful."
That would REALLY kill our free will.
Still, the message is there.
As my friend's watch blinks at him:
"Watch Your Words!"

Richard writes: "Our sages tell us that a person is predestined to expire after having spoken their allotted number of words they will utter in their life. " --
Just to be precise, though the Talmud does not mention this teaching, a few Chassidic rabbis in the past two hundred years have thought it. R' Elimelech of Nidov and Rabbi Naftali Zvi Horowitz of Ropczyce are examples.

This could be misleading
I understood that Hashem only counts our words which have no use [Devarim Betelim] - but words of Torah. friendship, Chizuk, making Sholom, Kiddush Hashem etc etc - are not included. On the contrary - Marbeh Torah - Marbeh Chayim.

Chofetz Chaim certainly directed us this way.
The answer is an unqualified yes. We learn from the great Chofetz Chaim that our speech is extremely powerful and that we need to guard our speech carefully. Other sages taught, "Say little & do much." Even in a parody of Kenny Roger's "The Gambler" we hear the words (translated from the Yiddish) :go not where it's forbidden and DON'T SAY WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO. How many of us get "hung by the tongue?" We've heard that Goliath was slain by "the jawbone of an ass." How many relationships, sales, etc have we destroyed with that same weapon?

This video is SUCH a powerful illustration.Thank you Aish for letting us see it. Our sages tell us that a person is predestined to expire after having spoken their allotted number of words they will utter in their life. Therefore he or she should make the best efforts to talk only words of Torah and of good deeds to the best of their ability.
