a question of jewish law and emotion
Though one may want to give up his life in the place of another, if Jewish law prohibits this then he must not do so, as even our lives belong to God. There is a difference in halachah between a time of war and peace

It would be beneficial to get a halachic response to this question...let Aish ask a Rav and have him write a responsa.

Unfortunately, this occurred multiple times in Jewish History...
... and there are detailed halachic discussions around this, for those who wish to research it further. It's not a simple question, but it is a real one that has happened in our nation's tragic history.
