I remembering someone saying that a friend of his from India who moved to the US for work called his family and told them in America you can negotiate on the price of a car but you cannot negotiate on the price of vegetables. Interesting slant of priorities. I would rather drive my 10 year old Civic and get the change to haggle on the cost of vegetables.

Wise Advice for the Middle East
This should be required viewing for every Anglo who moves to the Middle East. When I did, I still remember when I would go to the store (or even to the bank for a mortgage) and would be told a price. I would say, "OK", like any American. Then they would give me that knowing smile that said, "You can't be THAT naive."At the same time, I don't have the patience (or perhaps it is cultural fortitude) to haggle all day.So I learned that whenever I am told a price in this part of the world, I politely ask, "Is there a discount?" (Yesh Hanacha?) Nine times out of 10, I get a chuckle, 5% off and intact pride.
