Wise Advice for the Middle East
This should be required viewing for every Anglo who moves to the Middle East. When I did, I still remember when I would go to the store (or even to the bank for a mortgage) and would be told a price. I would say, "OK", like any American. Then they would give me that knowing smile that said, "You can't be THAT naive."At the same time, I don't have the patience (or perhaps it is cultural fortitude) to haggle all day.So I learned that whenever I am told a price in this part of the world, I politely ask, "Is there a discount?" (Yesh Hanacha?) Nine times out of 10, I get a chuckle, 5% off and intact pride.
