"You shall not make any sculptured image or any picture of that which is in the heavens above, which is on the earth below, or which is in the water beneath the earth." Shemot 20:3 (Exodus) [Gutnick chumash translation (Chabad)]. Sadly, there are many people to place more value in the pictures than in human beings they take pictures of. And sadly, people instill the essence (soul?) of the people they idolize in their pictures...making idols out of them. (If I treat a picture of a great rabbi, I am considered by others to disrespect him.) My G-d is HaShem, and thank G-d one cannot take a picture of Him (It).

Iconography and Culture
How sad a culture that must rely on icons and physical things to perpetuate it. The Jews of Europe and later the Middle East were robbed of everything physical that could be construed as an icon and yet the survivors managed to take hold and despite their losses continue to perpetuate a great and wise culture. It is said civilization is skin deep, it is shallower still if it must rely on icons to perpetuate it!

Efforts were misdirected
The bottom line is that art consists of material things. At least a third of the world' s Jewish population was being brutally slaughtered at the hands of the Nazis. Roosevelt and Churchill knew this and what did they try to preserve? Material things. They gave every conceivable reason not to bomb the rail heads, to slow the executions. They could have saved many of those who perished, but then they were merely Jews. Excuse me if I do not idolize Roosevelt or Churchill.

Saving art versus saving Jews
Of course the fact that the Allies sent people into harms way to save art stands as an indictment for the lack of effort made to save Jews by bombing the train tracks. BUT in their eyes, the art they saved is a form of religion - another 'idea' that the Nazis wanted to destroy.

Does anybody know who they are without knowing their own history and culture? I think focusing on the positives of the past is essential for good morale of society. Can't wait to see this whole movie.
