For those of us who don't see ourselves as "First Responders"

Of course this moved me to tears, and this is a story of heroes. But be careful now, for perfectionists and other all-or-nothing people who view this and don't think beyond the face-value message, and can despondently feel that any worthwhile accomplishments - if depicted this way- are not attainable for typical people. These thoughts can cause defeatism, and result in the opposite of what this may have been intended for: throw in the towel and remain complacent. On the other hand, we must realize what we can accomplish and how heroic small acts are! I just read an entire book of stories about how a single smile saved someone's sanity or motivated someone to eventually turn his life around. Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld ztz"l, who changed the world by helping people realize how BIG they were and could become, would frequently repeat that we are at our greatest when "imitating" G-d. Just as G-d is merciful, so must we be, etc. (He never said, Just as G-d makes cataclysmic miracles, so must we.) His favorite example: What about G-d's power of bringing life into the world - to make something/someone live? How can we imitate that? In simple ways, not cataclysmic. WE can greet someone warmly and be interested in their words, smile, offer a helping hand, offer words of comfort and support at tough moments...see what someone might need and try to help. Renewed hope, joy, building of self-esteem, or other forms of literal infusion of life-force into another person are the results! These are the kinds of "soul markers" we can all access and accomplish... Not so truly small after all! G'mar Chasima tova le'klal Yisrael!
