Universe vs the Melech?
My response to Carl Sagan's famous line, "The universe is all that is, all there ever was, and all that will ever be" is"Hashem melech, Hashem malach, Hashem yimloch l'olam va'ed."

Quite poetic, but...
It's easy to get caught up in Sagan's soothing voice and beautiful poetry. Cutting through to the actual words and you find that his logic leaves something to be desired. His call to "deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot" is of course a great goal to pursue. But I don't see how our small size is a case for or against preserving and cherishing the earth. If we were a gargantuan planet, with only a few surrounding celestial bodies, we would make the same case for preserving and cherishing it. On the flipside, one could just as easily make the opposite case: Our relatively tiny size just shows how *un*important the earth is, so we should not feel so bad in destroying it. (Speaking rhetorically, of course.) In addition, countering Sagan, our apparent uniqueness in being the only world known so far to harbor life could be an argument *for* our privileged position in the universe, not *against* it.
