Subtle undetectable course corrections
Its easier to explain away after the fact - with children, than trying to motivate change. Change is unknown, scary. so parents should formulate an action plan that gradually, invisibly cut electronics time but increases family and real ppl time. People always come before things. But a child will never learn it unless they "catch" it by way of example from the parents. If children get one on one time and feel the warmth of emotional closeness and approval, respect that their view counts and has worth. They will forget the electronics...and of course timers on the decoder, help too. with teenagers the added difficulty is pressure to conform - everyone's doing it. Its never too late. little by little. We once sent a group to help dig for water drums to be installed in Africa. the 14 yr old came back, with a greater reality of real life and real ppl than before. He didnt even miss the gagets while there.

too dramatic a changeover
Whatever our policies, they need to be implemented within the current context - not make such a sudden change-over that kids can't stand a chance at adapting or appreciating alternatives.

Starting late here
These parents should have set rules and boundaries way,way before this confrontation. They just sit there and allow this girl to speak to them disrespectfully; shows they did not take parenting seriously. It starts from birth.
