Do whatever you can to always be a mensch.
Mom passed away so early and never lived to see the opportunities I had to follow her advice in the times of my most difficult struggles and the wonderful results that were evident later. I take solace inthe fact that my Dad did get to see these things.

my mother's true advice
If someone looks "funny" (in a strange or menacing way), they are "funny". I once tried to be non judgemental and politically correct and got hit hard by a mentally ill, homeless woman.
Always listen to Mama.

My dad's best advice was very simple..."Nothing lasts forever." When I was in an upsetting situation, I hung on to those words of wisdom. Unfortunately, they are also true when you are in a GOOD situation.

You will only become who you are, when I am gone...
My mother and I were as close as two human beings could possibly get. She was nobody's Jewish mama, she was always true to herself, her unique ability to "sense" things added to her unique personality. We also shared laughter as a tool through tough times. I was considered by others as "fragile." When my mom was dying of cancer, she said to me: "You don't know how strong you really are. And you won't know who you are, until I am gone. You will surprise yourself, as well as others. It was miraculously true. My mother's legacy of strength to my brother and I.......

Best advice my mother gave me was, "just cause you have holes in your underware, doesn't mean you have to tell everybody, HaShem knows, which is enough", which was her way of telling us to keep our personal matters quite, and let HaShem handle the rest!
