Should we lie to our kids in order to build their self esteem?

Self esteem is built by experiencing true success and not being praised for what we instinctively know is substandard performance. It is also built by being taught to continue until we are able to overcome adversity and difficult situations and understanding that we are capable people. It is not built by lies.

No. IMO, most kids (unless they're very young) will realize exactly what the parent is doing. And feeling the parent needed to lie makes the whole thing seem much worse. Constructive is the way to go.
