Wonderful. Especially since the owner of the car hit thought it was okay to buy a nazi -- sorry, german -- car.

charity
i once rented a car &....did some damage to the front of it [after mistakenly hit a car in front of me]
when i returned the car i knew if they noticed the damage they would [over?]charge me hundreds
of $$$, so i made a promise that if i woudnt get charged, i would give $100 to a certain charity. well, upon returning the car , as usual the guy went around the car inspecting it, saw the damage & just continued on... i was free! & yes i gave the $100 to the charity!!
was this ethical? i dont think i was obligated to insist that i damaged the car...

I know a guy
I know a guy who backed out of the driveway and hit a car - got out to see the damage - got back in and backed away from the car only to hit another car - he took responsibility for both - but it was oh so funny (especially to see his face right afterwards)- always pays to be honest!!!

WOW!
What a BEAUTIFUL lesson! We should ALL take it to heart- no matter HOW hard it is to admit blame. I loved the irony of the hitch-hiker's consideration. I was once given a lift by a Russian couple. They were speaking to each other in English, so I asked if they always spoke to each other so. They said no, but since I was in the car, they felt it would be rude to speak in another language in front of me. ...! Wow!

Always worked for me
I had this kind of experience, e'g', backing out of my driveway in a low-visibility snowstorm and crashing hard into a car parked at the curb on the opposite side. I left an apology note with my contact number, dreading the charges I'd be hit with - it was a new Cadillac! I got a call later, with the most grateful comments about my exceptional honesty, and was paid back with honesty: He would let his insurance cover whatever it would and not ask me for anything! May we never be tested, but it's the way the TOrah wants us to go.

Good reminder many people try to get away.
Honesty starts with small things.
