(10)Anonymous, 31/7/2008 soul immortality Similar along the lines of Ruben A, in Genesis, when describing the creation of man, it says that we're all created in "the image of G-d" and all have a Divine Soul. G-d is immortal, infinate, and is unlimited. We, who have a piece of G-d within us, strive to do acts that will ultimately make us somewhat infinate. (So i dont believe that it's because G-d is the center of honor and we strive for honor, i believe it's that G-d is the essense of infinity and lives on forever, and we believe that even a human has the potential to "live" on forever - through his legacy and the deeds he's done that have inspired those who are still alive to do great deeds.) When someone has inspired another to do a great deed because of his own deeds, than when that first person physically dies, his spirit lives on forever, because those deeds will forever impact others in a chain reaction. That's why in Judaism, we believe that a soul has a "judgement" day just as we do, here on earth, because the soul can still aquire merits based on those who do good deeds as a result of that soul's good deeds in its lifetime!
Such an empowering and inspiring concept!

What I have learn from my rabbis is tha we all come "mi tahcat kise ha cavod" from under the trhon of honor, we, our inside, our thogts and feeling are a peace of the allmigthy, direct, if could be sayed in that way, and the allmighty is the center of honor in the world, not only because he is the owner of the honor but because he deservs all the honor of the world, and since we come from there is to a part of us, and wathever is a part of us we aspire for it, we needed to our living, (just like water for us, maybe, we have it inside of us but each time we need a "recharge", is just important to remember that it belongs to him and not to us)
and thats why is important for us... beacuse it give us some honor... at least to a lot of people...
(8) Beverly Kurtin, Ph.D., 11/7/2008 We're afraid of dying I think that most people who want to be remembered for something in their lives are simply afraid of dying. I find it odd that some people are more afraid of public speaking than of dying when public speaking could be a way of being remembered.
Whenever I look at the sun or the moon I reflect upon the fact that all of our ancestors saw the same heavenly bodies and even though I've not the foggiest idea of where we came from, we all gazed upon the same things and from that I get a feeling of connection with those who have passed on.
If I am remembered for anything at all I hope it is because of something good I managed to do.
(7) Jane, 9/7/2008 Immortality, of Sorts I always understood that need to be a result of our deep desire for immortality. I think Barbara who was the third to respond here has the right idea. There is a lot of contentment to be had in just living with integrity and a good moral compass. The world does not make it easy to do this. It can be a struggle. I have found that often people are put off by those who cling to integrity. Maybe we confuse being remembered with being loved. I find the people I rembember most are the ones who were kind to me.
(6) Lisa, 8/7/2008 Does it matter? I agree with everyone's comments. I find myself quoting my father all the time, and he's been gone for 8 years. My niece, who is his namesake, never met him, but hopefully she'll get to know him through the memories and the wisdom he imparted to us. But...at some point we will all pass away, and no one will remember who passed down these pearls of wisdom, only the wisdom remains. So, does it matter?

(5) Rifi Shanks, 8/7/2008 Being remembered is how we live on. A dear friends mother told me once that by being remembered is how we live on in the hearts and minds of our loved ones. It may well be the only way we truly live on. I believe that.

I think people want to be remembered because they need to believe that their being in this life was important. However, we make the mistake of wanting to be important to others when what we really need is the belief that we are important to ourselves. If we are good people, do the right things, and lead a virtuous life, then we should be satisfied that our lives mattered even if nobody else gives us that recognition. We are always recognized by G-d !!!!

(2) Elisheva, 8/7/2008 Confusing Fame with Significance For so many today, it is important to be remembered not for the good they have done or the difference they have made, but simply to be well known to the masses. They seek notoriety for its own sake- good or bad- and in doing so they confuse fame with significance. The famous are rarely significant and the truly significant among us are rarely famous.

Atlas-Acuna, 8/7/2008 I'm not sure it is important to be remembered What's important is to be a good person helping others, taking care of the enviornment, family, community, and country. The reward will be that we will be remembered for that but that is not the focus, it is the right thing to do.
