The trick is knowing how to let them be children and knowing when to teaching them to be adults.
Being a Parent doesn't mean being your child's adversary. You can be their friend and they will work to earn your respect and love.

It's not neccessarily that they meant we should learn to act so, but I think the point here was to learn how not to try disciplining our today's children in such manner. If the lesson is taken accordingly, then we can learn from here too...

As a parent our job is to inspire our children to reach for the stars, but in a positive way. Praising their achievements however small and holding back all the negative criticism, even when we think they could have tried harder. As we support and inspire our children along the way, we are building on their strengths and not focusing on their weak spots.

Children in the 21st century are different. Even though they are glued to tv & pc screens, they are smarter wisecracks. Their patience runs low and they all think they are einsteins. Most parents try old tricks which dont work any more. I think the most important thing to motivate your child is to make him believe that you support him on his path to achieve anthing. As a parent in today's world, pushing the child too much can have repurcursions. Its best to show the child the light at the end of the tunnel and give him a gentle thrust every now and then. The sense of self achievement works great for children. So as parent, one should always be an invisible support for this child.
Just like Hashem's love & support is invisible to us, we should be similarly invisible to our children.

Motivating children involves consistancy and positive reinforcement - otherwise if they are pushed around too much, then they will be scorned for much of the rest of their life. Verbal and physical abuse can be very counterproductive, especially for children growing up to adulthood.
