the simple reason a person would use humor in an awkward situation is because there's nothing else to do. either you'll laugh about it or cry about it. personally, i enjoy laughing more than crying- it keeps my spirit younger(and my appearence).

11/14/2007 10:04:00 PM Humor is what keeps a relationship fresh
It's best to be in a relationship or marriage with humor and laughter, which helps keep it alive...As for love itself, like Rosie & Sherrie said in the DatingMaze portion of aish.com, love doesn't conquer all, so if a relationship doesn't work out, then it is really not worth the time to continue or go back to.

11/14/2007 12:27:00 PM We use humor to avoid facing issues that imply we are broken or need to change.
Nervous tension and embarassment over our lack of understanding of ourselves or how to appropriately handle situations can result in very funny comments that we use as fig leaves over our own soul's nakedness.

In general, using humor in an awkward or sad situation is meant to ease the negative feelings and make people happy. I agree with Anonymous, though, in the video I think the woman wants to feel like she's making this easier, so she can say to herself, "Well, I tried to make this less depressing, if he's going to keep being sad, it's his own fault."
God bless.

Let's imagine there is person A and person B. Person A is the woman in the video and Person B is the man packing his belongings. Person A has just hurt person B. In order to lessen any guilt she may be feeling, person A will feel justified in her actions by "trying" to be funny. In other words, it doesn't really matter if person B laughs or not. Because it's not really about person B anyway.

11/11/2007 1:35:00 PM humor/laughter/jokes/"Bibeechot"-pulls the heart!
even in the times of the talmud a shiur was started with a joke,to help settle the mind for concentration. it's purpose isn't to lessen the degree of severity, however, more for objectivity. today society doesn't realy take things seriously so most things are jokes, and can't realize a serious moment. i at times make that mistake with my own spouse only afterwards realizing it is too late!! then my wife wants to know why i conteplate what happened, in the mind and on paper, so it doesn't happen again!! we should all try are best to lessen these times but they are here for a test to improve ourselves grow!! be strong and a good rosh chodesh!!
