Learn the Hebrew Letters

The first step in learning the Hebrew language is to learn the names of the letters. The sound of the letter is usually the beginning sound of the letter's name.

About Pronounciation

There are different dialects of the Hebrew language. The two most common pronunciations are the Ashkenazic dialect, used by European Jewry and their descendents, and the Sefardic dialect, used by Jews from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas. Modern Hebrew uses the Sefardic pronunciation, whereas the pronunciation of prayer or reading from the Torah is dependent on one's descent. The first stage of this ulpan presents the Ashkenazic pronunciation.

This is truly a great teaching tool. Lots of fun and a different way other than reading the alef bet from a book. This is really wonderful and will be used alot. Thanks for all you wonderful articles/tapes, etc.

Hebrew alphabet

Great! I'm planning to study it every day and learn it by heart. Then I can start reading. Would love to learn the Sefardi pronunciation, considering my origins. And, like Chava said, the Temani pronunciation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the wonderful educational effort and guidance you provide for the Jewish community and all humanity. It certainly contribute to the bettering of our world.

Temani Pronunciation Please!

This is really great. I would really appreciate a Temani voice (someone who pronounces Hebrew according to the Yemenites). I understand that they are the only ones who preserved the original alef, ayin, chet, chaf, and many other sounds that neither Ashkenazis nor Sefardis pronounce today. Many Israelis I know use this pronunciation in their prayers and I am trying to be one of them. Thanks so much!

This is a wonderful web site for someone just starting to learn hebrew. I am studiyng for a BA in Bibical Studies and I will need to learn both Hebrew and Greek in order to be more effective in my calling. This is absolutly brillaint and extrodinary site, it is very helpful to me. I'v just started a course to learn Hebrew.

This site would be even more helpful if the name of the character was written underneath. My opinion is that it would be more helpful to see the charter, hear it pronounced and see it's name at the same time. Thank you so much

great aid BUT

Great teaching aid, but would love to have vowels included! I'm no longer teaching, but still tutor a couple of kids who have learning disabilities. One of these students learns best visually and loves anything computer related. And this is so much more fun than my hoemmade flashcards!

Your site better illustrates the differences in the shapes of the letters!

I recently signed up for Beginning Hebrew 1001 at the school I attend. I decided to familiarize myself with the language a little before the class started. I found a couple of sites on the Hebrew alphebet before finding your site and was very discouraged to find many of the letters looked identical!!! Then, luckily, I found your site. I was thrilled to see the enlarged letters and began to notice the differences. Now I'm more familiar with them than I ever thought I would be. Each letter seems distinctly different to me. (It also helps so much to hear the names of the letters pronounced. Now I won't feel like an idiot in class!)

Done well...please add more lessons. Also, you might want to convert the pause/play/forward/reverse buttons into buttons similar to a tape or CD player, just like Windows Media Player or RealPlayer...

This is great!

I really enjoy this sight. I can see and hear the letters and play them over and over for a better understanding of the letter and it's sound. It is the best I have seen so far.

This is Excellent! Because hearing speeds the learing process.... only I feel that each individule may not have the same ability to advance ... so there should be a slower or advanced pace of presentation offered.

Bad Graphics - confusion beth - kaph

Hi!

Your Page is nice - but one can't distinguish beth and kaph! The bottom of the kaph is ROUND, the bottom of beth is straight.
If possible, you can correct.

Aish.com replys: Sorry for the confusion. The key is that in the beit the bottom bar extends beyond the upright and in the coph the bottom bar does not.

So Easy to Follow!

Its been a long time since I studied Ivrit and started to forget my Alef-Beis, but this interactive method was what I needed - easy and at my own pace. Do you intend to introduce the script alphabet also?

I was learning Hebrew always doubting my pronounciation; this page is very helpful. What would be reaaaaalllyy great is to have some words pronounced too, especially those that arise quite often in the Torah. That would be sweet.

An excellent idea!

This is a great tool for adults like me who are learning Hebrew for the first time. Perhaps a transliteration of the pronunciation would help as the speakers on my computer are less than perfect!

Great learning tool!
