Norman Finkelstein Loses It

The anti-Israel professor stormed off the air during a debate, calling the moderator “a certified moron”

Controversial anti-Israel professor Norman Finkelstein abruptly stormed off the air during a debate, calling the moderator, Dr. Alan Mendoza, “a certified moron”

Finkelstein, author, most recently, of Method and Madness: The Hidden Story of Israel’s Assaults on Gaza, began to hurl epithets about halfway through the 17-minute segment. These included accusing his debate partner, Jewish historian and Aish HaTorah lecturer Ken Spiro, of promoting “Israeli propaganda” at the expense of facts.

The two were supposed to be debating the notion that Israel is held to a double standard. It devolved into a diatribe. Watch the video below – thing heat up about halfway through.

Mr. Finkelstein ...

speaks the TRUTH and has become a convenient whipping boy.

Good Job Ken!

This was classic lunacy of Norman Finkelstein, a self hating individual, who has lost all common sense and moral sense. Thank you Ken Spiro for tolerating the diatribe from Mr. Finkelstein and standing up for Israel

Finkelstein is not an Historian

As Wikipedia points out, Dr Finkelstein was granted a PhD from Princeton. He has held tenure, but was subsequently removed. Nonetheless Dr Finkelstein is an academic with credentials in Political Science. Rabbi Spiro has an MA in History (as his website claims). They are not both Historians. I think its important to realize that regardless of whether one feels Finkelstein's claims are correct or not (I entirely disagree), it would be more helpful to engage with the evidence that he is using. For a start, Finkelstein's point begins by intimating that there is no standard in the UN. This isn't true. Every sub-section of the UN has its own charter, and often they're set up based on Security Council resolutions, which outline the major legal definitions that each body is mandated to oversee. So when Israel is criticized in the Security Council, the question becomes which Statute of the UN Charter is it violating, how and why, and what international legal violation is this being committed. Israel is not a full member of the ICC. Does the UN Security Council opine every act of violation of the UN Charter? Actually it does not. The question then becomes why not, and what is the modus operandi of the criticism? Its actually obvious, while th PLO has gained traction from its observer status, in the last 50 years or so, many Arab nations in the SC actually use the SC to draw attention away from their own human-rights violations. This is the point. As regards Finkelstein's other point that Resolutions against Israel would be meaningful if Israel actually listened to them is also spurious. No state is obligated to follow any Security Council resolution that has been vetoed by the Permanent Council Members. So Israel's lack of response is perfectly in line with the UN Charter, and International Law. Rabbi Spiro's point however does remain unsubstantiated. One should actually define a double standard. For example Darfur is clear example of the standard.

Norman Finkelstein Needs to Calm Down

Finkelstein's obsessive rage with the Jewish State really calls into question his reliability as a legitimate critic and observer. Just because his name is "Finkelstein" doesn't absolve him of being examined just like every other anti-Israel mouthpiece. MANY people acknowledge that Israel is far from a perfect state, but I think many reasonable people can appreciate that when it comes to human rights, you deal with the WORST FIRST. Israel doesn't even come close on that list.

Only one person brain dead in this debate???

Norman Finkelstein is the only person brain dead in this debate! I have never seen such biased one sided rhetoric even during the Apartheid Era in South Africa. He is worse than all the Apartheid proponents combined, only on the opposite left side. All he wanted to do his express his totally biased opinions, half truths, and lies etc. Maybe he needs reprogramming and to expand his reading matter?
I am very impressed with the moderator, I would have cut his video long before he did himself. Kol Hakavod to him.

I can stand this...

I would love to see a repentant Finkelstein.

As a son of a Holocaust survivor from Bratislava (Pressburg) Slovakia of Blessed Memory, living in a community here in Melbourne Australia made of 50% approximately actual survivors or their descendants I personally can't stand how Norman Finkelstein constantly talks about his "Yechis", his lineage, since his parents suffered greatly (unfortuantely) during World War 2 that gives him no right to view things in such a biased light.

There are literally thousands of Holocaust survivors or their descendants here in Australia who remain loyal steadfast Jews who don't use The Shoah, The Holocaust or their suffering (nebbach) under the Nazis and/or their collaborators as an excuse to show such disloyalty as Finkelstein to our Heritage.

Finkelstein's comments don't make sense logically! and his attempts to site his lineage as an excuse is pathetic!
This makes no sense.

Moreover many of us here in Australia and elsewhere see the beauty of our fantastic "Masorah" Torah traditions. Our defeat of Hitler YemachSHemo and the Nazis evil designs come through being proud, loyal and learnt and proud Jews,

Come and visit us here in Australia, and we can show you the many proud Jewish schools and institutions built by many survivors and their descendants.

Finklestein is an utter disgrace. Is he really a historian? He has the unwavering stare of a megalomaniac. He completely ignores facts & his typical reaction is to shout down his opponent. I despair for any students who are unlucky enough to be "taught" by him.

So sad

My heart is broken to hear a Jewish person talk like that. I literally cried. And a son of holocaust survivors...

Finkelstein Thinks He Gets A Pass

There are a lot of people from historically oppressed groups who will trade on their identity from that group to justify their public ranting/moralizing against said group. I imagine that Finkelstein feels his being a Jewish critic of Israel makes him more legitimate. It doesn't.

Unhinged

So uncomfortable.

Finkelstein is a phoney

Does he have a PhD ? Is he really a professor? Ask Allan Dershowitz

The Professor Discredited Himself

What a contrast of character. I commend both the moderator and Mr. Spiro for maintaining their aplomb; the professor unfortunately didn't seem interested or even capable of maintaining basic decorum. His anti-Israel bigotry appears to be based more on personal animus than fair-minded consideration of the facts.

Talk about conflicted morons!

Sounds like an exact description of himself!

More Examples Needed

Ken Spiro should also have pointed out the settlement freezes have been made several times and those freezes have neither stopped the violence against Israel nor brought the Palestinian leaders to the negotiating table.
Also, he should name some of the issues that UN has not responded to or countries whose actions are not condemed. He would do better to put these examples one against the other, as his opponent does.
Luckily, that opponent made the case for him by his tantrum!

Facts Don't Help

Sadly, once someone has declared themselves to be anti-Israel, the facts no longer matter.
