Value of Life

The list of values flows logically from the idea of ethical monotheism. In the beginning of Genesis, G-d creates wp05t30b.jpg (275591 bytes)humanity "in the image of G-d." G-d has no physical components. What does every human being possess that is G-d-like?

A soul, a spiritual entity that is completely non-physical, a piece of the infinite within him, so to speak. Every human being contains a soul, a divine spark, wp06t10b.jpg (277798 bytes)and therefore every life has infinite value. No matter who you are – from a tiny infant to a 90 year old invalid – all life has this infinite, divine spark and is intrinsically valuable and precious.

Therefore the Talmud teaches that saving a life is like saving a universe.

JUSTICE & EQUALITY

Since every human being has a soul, there is a basic equality amongst all.

The prophet Malachi said:

wp06t20b.jpg (283306 bytes)"Have we not all one Father? Has not one G-d created us? MALACHI 2:10

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

wp06t30b.jpg (288759 bytes)Since every human being has a soul, then we have the obligation to be like G-d, to emulate the Almighty. The Torah commands:

"...and you shall go in G-d's ways." DEUTERONOMY 28:9

How? Our Sages say, just as G-d is kind and merciful, you too should be kind and merciful.

G-d placed Adam and Eve, the parents of all humanity, in the Garden of Eden and told them: "Here is your garden, now tend to it." Every human being is responsible for the world. It’s our world – go take care of it.
