Shabbat, the day of rest, is the sacred day of the Jewish week. At the conclusion of the Six Days of Creation, God's universe was perfect and complete. God "rested" on the seventh day, allowing all the world's components to function in total harmony. We too, when we observe Shabbat, testify to God's creation of the world, as well as enjoying a day of both both physical and spiritual rejuvenation.
We begin Shabbat by lighting candles. We walk to the synagogue for services, which include the weekly Torah reading. We enjoy three festive meals throughout the day, beginning the night and day meals with kiddush and then partaking of two loaves of freshly-baked challah. Each meal is a special time to spend together with family and friends and to grow spiritually. Shabbat is concluded with havdalah.
