ANSWERS

1. a. Shearing - Gozez: Improving animal hide or human skin by removing hair, nail or skin.

b. Bleaching - M'labein: Removing unwanted elements from within a material.

c. Combing - M'napetz: Untangling very well tangled strings.

d. Dyeing - Tzove'ah: Changing or strengthening the color of a material or flesh.

e. Spinning - Tove'ah: Av: Spinning raw wool into a thread

f. Warping - Mesech: Av: Putting treads in a position that they can be woven.

g. Setting up the loom - Oseh Bateh Nirin: Av: Passing warp threads in the loom.

h. Weaving - Oreg: Positioning a thread in a woven cloth.

i. Unweaving - Potze'ah: Removing a thread from a woven material for a constructive purpose.

j. Tying - Kosher: Tying a permanent knot.

k. Untying - Matir: Untying a permanent knot in order to tie a new knot.

l. Sewing - Tofer: Attaching two flexible surfaces tightly by way of a third.

m. Tearing - Koreya: Detaching two surfaces that were 'sewn' for a constructive purpose (e.g. in order to re-sew in a different manner).

2. When the brushing doesn't necessarily remove hairs with every stroke, and one uses a brush set aside only for use on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

3. a. When the nail is: 1) painful and mostly detached, and 2) it is removed differently then normally removed during the week (never by use of a nail cutter), and 3) the removal doesn't draw any blood.

b. Never under normal or even painful situation.

4. a. By brushing or shaking it in any way, since the dust will then be removed.

b. By shaking it strongly, since the dust will then be removed. (Shaking it gently is permitted.)

5. a. It is permitted to:

i. and ii.: remove the surface dirt [only]
iii. even put water on it

b. It is prohibited to:

i. and ii.: put water on it
iii. scrub it strongly by hand or by way of a regular brush

6. It is permitted by way of a table squeegee, moving the dirt or liquid into a bowl, or by using a big cloth one doesn't mind dirtying.

One may not use something which one minds dirtying, and/or one may not make something so wet that it can not be removed without inevitably squeezing out the liquid.

This is because of the Gezeira against possibly coming to launder or wring out the material once it gets so dirty or wet.

7. One may not fold clothing on Shabbos on the folds, because folding is considered the final stage of laundering. One is allowed to fold not on the folds (e.g. either against the folds, or if the clothes have no folds).

8. With a type material that is preferably not of the blood color, and which one doesn't mind dirtying. If only a red cloth can be found, it is permitted, provided one's intention is not to dye.

9. a. With a single-knot and a bow, for less then 24 hours, or with a double-[halachic] bow even for a long time.

b. With a single knot for longer then 24 hours, or with a double-knot (knot, bow, knot = double-knot).

10. Yes, because to be a halachic knot, there must be intent to make one.

11. Professional knots: 2 knots when using 2 ends (double knot or square knot), or 1 knot in one end (Turkey Hitch/overhand knot) (e.g. in a plastic bag), or a necktie which is not a bow (i.e. doesn't come apart when pulled by the ends).

12. Any knot, tied for less than one week.

13. When it would otherwise be permitted to untie such a knot, and this should not be done in front of people who don't know the difference between cutting and untying.

14. It is permitted when it is used in a way that is temporary. It is prohibited if it replaces regular sewing and is meant to last for a while. (One hole is always permitted.)

15. Generally not, because the sticker was "glued" (Tofer) on the clothing to last for (at least) a while; it is therefore prohibited under the Melacha of tearing (Koreya).
