5th graders and their parents love it

I used the video to create a study sheet (crediting Lori Platanik, of course) and the 55 fifth graders I teach at an afternoon Hebrew school loved it as did their parents. Two weeks later I gave a written test and the overwhelming majority got 100%. Please keep these types of videos coming.

A really great video

Where were you when I needed to know this years ago in day school? I will surely teach this trick to my daughters when they will need to know this information on a chumash test in the near future, I"YH. Thanks again.

This really works for me :)

Other mnemonics I've come across aren't as visual, and for me I really need something to picture in my mind, or I won't be able to remember. This works beautifully!

I Forgot #3

One week after viewing your video, I couldn't remember a few of your mnemonics, but I knew the commandments by other means except for one ... the 3rd one. I couldn't remember "Oh my God", but after I cheated, & looked at my Bible, I thought of a better way to remember that it's the one about God's name. God = "G O D" (1 2 3). Three letters in God's name = 3rd commandment. I know that "God" isn't God's Hebrew name, but I think it will be easier for me to remember. I'll let you know next week!

I also use GIVS PMS KFC G= one G-d I= idolitry V= vain S= Shabbas P= honor parents M= murder S= Sexual immorality K= kidnapping (the real stealing) F= false witness C= Covet Definitely important to know the ten commandments. A lot of people think they keep the ten commandments but aren't. Hope this also helps. Keep up the great work Lori.

Hi, this was so charming and so easy to remember! Your eight did remind me of the book I have just finished and could NOT put down. It's called The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and in this case, I think you would agree, the book thief is a real charmer and beloved in so many ways. Eight is also, of course for infinity, and for DNA. And yes, handcuffs. And it's also for this year, still 2008. Make it good! This little piece is so sweet. PS. This book, The Book Thief, which is so much about humanity during terrible times, namely The Holocaust, is so wonderful I cannot recommend it enough. So I hope some readers do pick this up and are transported as I was!

No 3 good to see

I am sick and tired of hearing nearly every program other than the news exclaiming 'Oh my God'. It wasn't too long ago that blasphemy was offensive and therefore banned. Are our community watchmen asleep !!!!! get back in the drivers seat and ban O M G. 'only say Oh my God if he is !! and if He is,, you won't '

The greatest commandment

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength and your neighbour as yourself. A nice way to learn the commandments. I will practice doing it.

disagree with ninth commandment's interpretation

It states not to bear false witness vs your neighbor. Lying is more generic and at times it's a mitzvoth to lie e.g. to save a life by denying you know your neighbor's location to one who wishes to kill him. We do not accept Kantian rules of categorical imperatives without question. We are rabbinical Jews - not Torah Jews - we don't stone adulters or kill disobedient children. We are not fundamentalists.

A perfect way to teach children

I teach Sunday School to 5,6, and 7 year olds, and we discuss the commandments often. I have a colorful poster on the wall that I refer to, and this method will definitely be a help for the kids, as well as a fun way to try to remember. Thanks, Lori. I always look forward to your videos.

Ten Sayings, Not Ten Commandments

Originally these 10 were said in our daily prayers, but our Sages removed them on account of those who mistook the 10 for the 613. There are actually 613 commandments and the English translation of Aseret HaDibrot is really "Ten Sayings." Unfortunately, there are many Jews I know who pride themselves on keeping the "Ten Commandments" when it is all 613 (or at least those that can be performed today) that G-d wants.

That was perhaps the most concise and straight-fwd video Lori has given. If only more people would abide by this, there would be less conflict in the world. Thanks for putting the 10 Commandments in context!
