What a great piece!

Dear Lori,

I have immigrated from South America more than 20 years ago, and you have just described my experience:e.g; I still don't get the inside jokes…This was a great article!

I appreciate this article, being Sephardic speaking Spanish was embarrassing .

My father came from RhodesI Italy.nowGreece.my mom from N.Y. Her family from Turkey. As a young Sephardic girl, my family all spoke Spanish.upon hearing my mother and I conversing in a 5&10 store. This Angelo woe me turned to us and said speak English when in this country.i was embarrassed and asked my mom not to talk Spanish to me any moe. I was just practicing with my mom so our language would not become lost.I now speak to people who are emigrants who speak Spanish to let them feel welcome, and not embarrassed.

Olim in israel are just immigrants too.

When you go "on aliyah" to Israel and become an "oleh chadash" you find out in time that you are just an immigrant, no different if you had emigrated to Greece or any other foreign land. In recent years English has become more commonplace in Israel but you are still an immigrant nonetheless.

Thank you for those nice words, Mrs. Palatnik. I found them and the thoughts behind them very affecting. May you have continued success and accomplish a lot.

Identity

I'm rather taken aback by your identifying yourself as Mrs. on this site. Why do you find that necessary? I mean, wouldn't you feel just as important without it? I hope you take this question kindly, as it is meant....I'm just really puzzled....
