the kohen gadol's clothing
During the times of the Beit HaMikdash, The High Priest, or Kohen Gadol, wore special holy garments. One of these garments was an apron of sorts with 72 (I think) bells in the shape of pomegranates. The reason he wore the bells was that they would make noise as he walked, and the people would hear him coming and be prepared to respectfully welcome of one of the most important people in the nation.

WHOM TO SURPRISE AND HOW
It's just that an older person may take some time to handle a surprise, we,being younger, assume everyone likes a surprise, . I find that even nicer than a surprise is to announce you're coming and She has the opportunity to arrange the details of the visit.

I find that as we get older, we find it more difficult to absorb surprises. We need to be prepared beforehand. A hint is always good.
