Fundamental

This video is fundamental and amazing. The idea presented of why G-d loves kindness from us is so foundational for what we are here to do as people. Giving money towards charity that I can afford- Gives me happiness being my big reward. Charity makes my life worthwhile so I give. Knowing I helped people today to live. Demonstrating G-d's love for his children

Charles was comparing parents with G-d. Parents likes to see their children get along with each other and to share. G-d likes to see his children share what they have with others; to help each other out when needed. It makes G-d proud of his children when he sees them doing this. G-d knows they have learned what he has taught them to do. You love your children and when your children love each other, they are helping you love each one of your kids, even when you are not around to do this yourself. Plus if you have several kids (like G-d does) even parents need some help from their kids. This is why G-d loves charity. It's love in action. He knows yes we have been listening to him.

Now that I am becoming more observant

I started to collect my change and put in the boxes at Shul or the Kollel. In reply to #1- this has been the attitude of some for decades. Sadly it is not new. In reply to #4-we have to start somewhere. As a young child I recall not willing to give up anything I felt was mine.

To Anonymous - the Greatest Charity

According to Maimonides, the greatest charity is helping someone acquire a trade or start off in business so he/she can be independent. Yes, the expectation of entitlement, whether of the poor or the rich, individuals or corporations, is bad for our country. Yet we need to help those who cannot support themselves and their children. We need that "safety net" for the unemployed who cannot find work. Having "workfare" programs for the able-bodied was an attempt to address the problem you spoke of. The US is a work-in-progress. There should be no hungry children in this rich land.

I think YES, it's about charity. And this is very sweet. The word charity itself, if you listen carefully has "share", an echo within it, as in share i ty. I hear it. Do you? There is a deep alchemy to words themselves, and the share in charity, and the cher, or dear of it, is clear, within the word itself. It's possible to take a trip across languages. To write a different kind of dictionary. I know it. I do it. Thanks for a very sweet and charming video with a message for all time.

G-d doesn't "get pleasure". G-d is complete and unchanging. We follow his blueprint for the correct life, pure and simple.

Kind of Disappointing

I thought this story may have been leading up to the son actually giving to someone who needed it. Giving ones sibling a gumball is sweet and nice but I was hoping this story would lead to and ending such as the one I have with my son, every time we stop at a local store for milk. It really bothers him to see the same homeless man there, all the time. Every time my son asks if he can take the change from the console in my car and gives it to that man. If it's not very much (enough for a meal) he asks for more to give...and I definitely give. I guess the idea here is that if the boy has learned to think of his sisters maybe he will eventually think further outside his family and actually give to those in need, not just those who want. In my opinion, this story does not really reflect charity, it reflects siblings caring about each other.

we give because we care

Jews are family and therefore we have to care about one another. the fact that he gave the gumball to his sibling is a metaphor for us caring, and giving to our siblings, the other jews around us.

You should shep nachas from your children always.

When I witness my older daughter, whom I nickname Mini Me, helping her little sister out with homework or getting her a snack for school in the morning madness rush, I derive such nachas . She knows that this is the greatest form of charity that she can do .

One problem

The US is becoming a welfare state. I know people with multiple children who refuse to work because their net pay would be about as much as they receive on welfare. And their entitlement attitude will be passed on to their children. Are we really giving to the "poor" (who refuse to work) or are we enabling them to become dependent on the state, stripping away their own self-esteem? And, how do we help those who can help themselves, but refuse?
