now I understand better how the shma encapsulates my faith

I say the Shma every day, but I never thought much about it. Today I had an irresistible urge to understand what is actually means for God to be One. This dissemination of spiritual truth is by far the best use of the internet, which is so often used for corruption. Thanks, Charlie, for taking the pains to make sure we the people really get it! To be fair, I was led here by another article on AISH about the Shma.

Thank you Charlie for all your inspirational words!!

Where were you when I was in high school....hopefully our kids hear these important & relavent messages!

Interesting site. Thank you

(134) Lauren Goldman, September 20, 2015 7:20 AM

The word hidden in the Shema.

When the ayin at the end of shema is combined with the dalet at the end of echad, it forms eid, 'witness'. When we say the Shema, we are witnessing the oneness of G-d.

L'shana tova.

Something that has changed me FOREVER

This video presentation has given me a significant insight and inspiration to continue to love and appreciate my identity as a Jew!
I am so grateful to Aish and Mr. Harary for taking their precious time to share this with us.

(132) Faith, August 15, 2014 9:09 PM

Beautiful, beautiful video of a powerful subject, well explained, Thank you!!!

I have been very curious about the Sh'ma and more than anything now I want to learn it, internalise it and also teach it to my child because I agree with everything explained in the video. I have a 10-year old child - only -child and always felt the need to teach her and share with her something special that she can always remember, hold on to whether I am with her or not, I believe I have been guided to learn about this prayer, as someone from a Christian background, I am literally breathless with happiness, Thank you Lord.

(131) Rachel Ackerman, May 27, 2014 5:14 AM

(125) Anonymous, April 3, 2013 5:21 AM

was feeling so empty I was getting to call the crisis hotline to seek a reason not to end it all. I had told a young Jewish brother that I would get him some information about the Shema. Of course I went straight to Aish.com and Behold, I found your video, which reminded me whose child I am and that there is still a purpose for MY lifeI will continue seeking it for another day. Thank You is not enough but it is what I can give. keep sharing. You never know how your message will affect a life. Shalom Shalom

close to six thousand commentaries

I never thought I would be writing this much on line, and responding so constantly to articles on Aish and also Chabad, and responding to massive silence, over so much time. But I have to know, it is a story, I did not write, and that I am only receiving and sharing what I get. AV means Father in Hebrew and in English we have the aural equivalent which is, OF. And it is a word that connotes be longing and belonging. It is also a word contained by the very streets we walk, as in AVenues, and it is a word very much part of the genus, AVes for birds, and it is also, Jewish or not, in Ave Maria, and HAVE, and many words, across Babel. I am saying this is NOT random, and that the journey I have taken, that is already in print is powerful and that it is ALL of GOD. Hear the AWE itself in the word God. Now I can do this, constantly, and in so doing, and beyond, I am leading a totally visibly synchronous life. We're moving FAST into a new state of consciousness, and in saying this, here, I am Express sing myself as best I can. I believe I am now allowed to totally be heard, to go ALOUD.

(117) leo napoli, January 1, 2013 6:37 PM

The One who made us, loves us more than a parent does. And "in Him we live and move and have our being".

(113) Marty mandel, July 31, 2012 12:10 PM

From theory to reality

I think that this is an awesome and inspirational video. However, the aspect that this video, and so many others like it is missing, is the required tools. I am well aware that I live each day spinning aimlessly in a circle without long term goals. My question is, how do I move beyond my insecurities, self-doubt, and fleeting fantasies so that I can devise a realistic plan and then set and strive for the smaller goals that will day bring me to my ultimate desire? I am not only spinning in circles, I am lost within that circle without much hope of finding a way out of it.

Dave Hunt, August 27, 2012 4:03 AM

Seek and you will find,

Open your eyes and look. Not at all those around you, or the situations facing you, Rather look to Ha Shem and see Him. Look upon He who gave all for you. It is only in Him that you will find what you are looking for. You must seek Him with all you have, even all your life. Do not look unto others, look unto Life Himself. I do not speak what is easy, or what I fully understand. I live in pain, all day, every day and there is no cure and little treatment. Hope sometimes seems lost, but then I hear "Hear oh Israel, Ha Shem is One" I think on Him and somehow find strength for One more day, One new Hope in One who sets me free. Then I can look and see others that are around me and the trials facing, but only after knowing the One who loves me. Seek and you will find.

leo napoli, January 1, 2013 6:41 PM

Seek and you will find

Dave, may G-D BLESS You indeed !

(107) Myron, May 22, 2012 3:42 PM

Using one's gifts

God gives talents and abilities to everyone as He wills. I am expected to use the talents God has given me but often I am not given the opportunity to show what I can do because of jealousy, influence, partiality, personal dislike, etc., by those with the power to give those opportunities, that is, beyond the basic expectations of the job. If I am then powerless, should I feel that I have let God down?

great

so many wonderful things u learn in Shema Israel

(94) Caroline, February 27, 2012 6:50 PM

Lovely.

Beautiful video. Really inspiring and a great reminder and reconnecting for my practice of reciting the Shema. My only concern is that there weren't any people represented in the video who were not white men. Would have been nice to see some women and/or people of color. Would have felt more in line with unity and oneness. :) Great video nonetheless. Thanks!

(93) Anonymous, February 27, 2012 7:02 AM

A totally inspiring piece

Thank you for this reminder...it is so resfreshing and empowering - shalom!

(88) Anonymous, February 24, 2012 7:47 PM

WHAT ABOT MOM?

The Devine One, is One, neither Dad or Mom but both and more. When we say the Lord is One, we leave out the Lady. Your case would have been better stated by using the word "Parent ," rather than "Dad." This leaving the Feminine out of the equation or saying she's included in under a general "he," is like the recent all male GOP panel making decisions concerning women's health.

Chavi, February 26, 2012 9:29 PM

Hello! G-d is our FATHER in Heaven! Please drop that feminism nonsense.

(87) Anonymous, February 24, 2012 7:37 PM

(86) Dovid K, February 24, 2012 7:36 PM

a song I wrote

Very good piece! Here's something I wrote/recorded: In a world which holds so many things Where the lonely weep and children sing I wish I had wings As I step out on the wire. But through the dark of night and the light of day I shall not fall or lose my way As these words remain my pillar of fire. Sh’ma Yisrael, HaShem Elokaynu, HaShem Echad. Emet v'yatsiv, v'nachon v'kayam, v'yashar v'ne'eman V'ahoov v'chaviv, v'nechman v'na'im, v'nora v'adir U'm'tukan u'm'kubal, v'tov v'yafeh hadavar hazeh Aleinu l'olam va'ed.* * “True and certain, established and enduring, fair and faithful beloved and cherished, delightful and pleasant, awesome and powerful correct and accepted, good and beautiful is this affirmation to us forever and ever.”

just what I needed today

I am a Limudei Kodesh teacher and have taught this same message. Right now I am facing a nisayon and watching/hearing this was the chizuk I needed. Even if we know something its encouraging to hear it delivered in such an inspiring way. Thank you!

(65) Devorah, February 23, 2012 5:25 PM

I felt like i was going in circles.GOD answerd through this beautiful message.Thank You Charlie!!

(64) Fangyu, February 23, 2012 5:11 PM

Good stuff. Thanks Charlie:-)

Also, all transgressions in this world actually descent from two greatest sins. One is idolatry and the other is adultery. The Jewish prayer "Shema" already speaks very clearly: Hear O, Israel, HaShem is our G-d, HaShem is one. If going against "HaShem is our G-d", that is idolatry, if going against "HaShem is one", that is adultery. One simple Jewish prayer kills all sins, isn't that amazing? Judaism is forever!!!!!!!

(63) Kay Singer, February 23, 2012 4:54 PM

Gratitude

Thank you Charlie, I needed this message so much today. It spoke to a deep inner question of my heart that I had shared with no one, however, God knew exactly the words I needed to hear. You are a precious vessel.

The peace of Shema

Focusing on Hashem upon falling asleep and waking up brings me the peace of knowing that Hashem is with me at all times. Since I started doing that years ago my life, believe it or not, is free of worry. My reliance on Hashem and my recognition of him keeps my mind centered on the fact that we have One whom we can trust. A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with a fatal disease. My doctor was amazed that I didn't do the "normal" thing when one is given months to live. I merely turned it over to Hashem. Two weeks later a phone call from my doctor confirmed my faith: They had made a mistake! They had misread the CAT scan; I don't have what they thought I did. I don't want to think of how upset and worried I'd have been had I not had known Who was in charge. What can I say except Baruch Hashem?

Sarah, February 23, 2012 3:06 PM

Baruch Hashem indeed! And may you always be blessed with good health!

(51) Anonymous, February 22, 2012 5:23 PM

There is peace in the Shema

You have inspired me once again. The Shema resonates with me whether it is spoken or sung and centers me on what matters. It might interest you to know that I am a school teacher in a Christian school and my class says the Shema every morning. As Ruth said to Naomi, your G-d is my G-d. Thank you for your tremendous work.

(26) Elisheva, February 20, 2012 2:59 AM

You explained more than the Shema!

A few of us were having a heavy spiritual discussion before Havdallah last night and we were trying to articulate/define that amazing "energy field" that some rabbis have....I think Charlie just explained it better than we could. They ARE the total and complete connection to HaShem and we feel it when in their presence. Todah Rabbah!

this is profoundly beautiful and true

I was moved by this, as I felt the passion and total belief Charlie had in making this video, which is, beautiful. What is very obvious to me, is that people seem to need also, often, to take the journey to get to this place. Even when we want to fast forward the journey, we can't, unless that person is ready to receive, and maybe the climb itself, up Jacob's ladder as you say, is part of getting to this place. But when one gets here, it's all that matters. You are so right, and so poetically and beautifully right. Thank you.

Shema Yisrael IS our purpose in life!

My thanks to Hashem for inspiring the creation of Aish.com and to Charlie for expressing this message so eloquently. A few weeks ago, I read Rabbi Jonathan Sacks' essay for Parsha Bo and came to a new understanding of those first six words of the Shema. I've copied Rabbi Sacks' words below so you can see for yourself. I had always focused on the last four words, Hashem Elokenu, Hashem Echod, the declaration of our faith in one G-d. But now I see that these six words declare our purpose as Jews. It is not just to repeat that declaration of our faith but to strive (as Yaakov did with the man/angel that accosted him all night) with all our heart, soul and might to understand (shema) the full scope of that message. Twice a day, we remind ourselves that Hashem chose us from among all his people to study, struggle with and reach for a full comprehension of the unity of our G-d, our Creator, The One. "Instead of a word meaning 'to obey,' the Torah uses the verb shema, untranslatable into English because it means [1] to listen, [2] to hear, [3] to understand, [4] to internalise, and [5] to respond. Written into the very structure of Hebraic consciousness is the idea that our highest duty is to seek to understand the will of God, not just to obey blindly.'

Thank you so much for this video. Im going through a difficult, confusing time now, and I don't really understand why Hashem has brought me into the situation that I'm in right now. This video helped me understand that Hashem knows what's best for me, and that He is only putting me into this situation for my own good, whatever that may be, even though I don't understand it at the moment. Thank you.

Last Word of Shema is EMES: Shema---EMES (Hear Truth)

I noticed that the last word of Shema is ...EMES, truth. Thus, when we read the Shema, we embrace, truth.....As we goe through life, from day to day, we read the Shema. With the passage of time more and more truth, EMES becomes revealed to us......THANKS Charile, for speaking in Rochester NY. Now, I must go and watch your videos and search for truth, EMES...

Just a Little Nit

Wonderful piece. I take issue with only one thing. The Shema is not a prayer--it is an anthem of faith to the truth of the one God. If you want to find the most important Jewish prayer, you will find it in the Amidah, the prayer "par excellence." Oh, yes (and many people make this error), why do so many folks say "anyways?"

who is in charge

very interesting. As always, you hit the nail on the head reminds me of Mrs.Rigler's article -Let go of the mouse. we have to keep in mind who is in control. excessive worrying is a sign of a "chisorone" of Emunah.

As always, Mr. Harary makes an excellent video. Dare I say, 'powerful' and great food for thought. I personally found its message comforting and beautiful; the images portrayed adds meaning. I have one quibble of course --I am Jewish, after all -- and that is that sometimes, too much food for thought can give us mental indigestion when we start to ask questions. But that is for another discussion. Mr. Hararay's videos are always inspiring.
