Last week former President of the United States Jimmy Carter publicly revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer of the brain. His condition almost certainly means that he faces death in the relatively near future. I feel it imperative to issue a warning to those already offering what they claim to be a theological judgment on his illness – a judgment which going back to the biblical book of Job has clearly been denounced as cruel and inappropriate.
You see, there are those already proclaiming with prophetic certainty that Jimmy Carter is being punished by God for his sins against Israel and the Jewish people. Carter’s cancer is the divine edict for his anti-Semitism. And with that smug analysis of heavenly justice these false prophets have unwittingly besmirched millions of righteous and God-fearing people who similarly find themselves suffering from incurable diseases and facing painful deaths.
Carter is not the only one dying from cancer. People in my own family were victims; pious and holy individuals I knew personally were targets of agonizing final ailments. But the Torah taught us not to dare make judgments based on equating someone’s suffering with sin and be guilty of the crime of the friends of Job.
The Talmud (Baba Metzia 58b), while expounding on the harm that can be inflicted with words, explains what the Bible means when it condemns the sin of “oppressing a stranger.” It offers this example:
“If someone is visited by suffering, afflicted with disease or has buried his children, one must not speak to him as his companions spoke to Job: ‘Think now, what innocent man ever perished?”’
The Talmud condemns the kind of friends who told Job he must’ve committed some crime in order to deserve his suffering. The rabbis consider their behavior in the category of those who oppress others with words. The friends of Job simply assumed sin – when God himself made clear to the reader at the beginning of the book that there can be other reasons for suffering which in no way reflect on the virtue of the afflicted individual.
True, the Talmud also teaches: “If a man sees that painful suffering visits him, let him examine his conduct.” (Brachot 5a). Our suffering may well be a consequence of our transgressions and we need to try to figure out what we did wrong and get back on track. We can understand the message since God chastises us “measure for measure.”
How can we reconcile these diametrically opposite statements?
The fact is there is really no contradiction here. In both instances the suffering may or may not be the consequence of one’s actions. But there is a major difference between using tragedy to find fault with others and having tragedy enlighten us with regard to our own failings.
The bottom line is that no individual can judge anyone else and deduce from the mere presence of suffering that this is God’s punishment for sin. It may or may not be true. It is in our personal lives that we are taught that for ourselves we should use painful events as spurs to self-reflection; our response to suffering needs to be introspection to discover if there might indeed be a divine message which calls us to repentance. But the story of the friends of Job speaks to us with a firm warning not to allow us the right to condemn others simply because of their distress. Someone else’s pain dare not be reason to justify moral disapproval.
Foundational Bias
Let me be perfectly clear. I have very strong negative feelings about Jimmy Carter. I agree with those who rank him among the three worst presidents in United States history, if not at the bottom of the list. I fault him for his many failures of leadership domestically. As a Jew, I find particularly offensive the way in which he made clear his bias towards the Palestinians – from whom he personally accepted many millions of dollars for his foundation – and his continued to this day obsessive hatred of Israel and its policies.
His comparison of the Israeli state to the apartheid of South Africa, going so far as to title his reflections on why the failure of the peace process can be blamed entirely on Israel “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid”, makes clear how his prejudice overwhelmed his reason and perfectly illustrates why liberal Alan Dershowitz had no problem openly condemning Carter as an anti-Semite.
What proved particularly galling last week was that at the very press conference in which Carter announced the graveness of his illness he still found it appropriate to use this very moment to vilify Israel as the cause for the lack of peace in the Middle East. Slandering Jews it seems is uppermost in his mind even as he knows he will soon meet his Maker.
I hold no brief for Jimmy Carter. I will not be among those offering the soon to be expected laudatory eulogies. But that does not take away from my concern that we not confuse Carter’s cancer with the heavenly judgment that surely awaits him when he faces God’s final verdict.
To do otherwise would be to impugn the righteousness of all those doing battle with illness. What we need to affirm is the truth that, while it is beyond our ability to comprehend, even the pious know pain and even the saintly endure sickness.
Let us render final judgment on Jimmy Carter for his actions, not by way of his fatal illness.

Carter was, is and always will be an anti semite.
Your comments are completely correct. Many Nazis lived a peaceful life after the war. We have absolutely no השגה in the דרכי השם. Besides מצוות ומעשים טובים, this world means nothing and for one small חסד, one can be repaid with 70 years of bliss.
(41) Reina Avigès-Verdoner, November 9, 2015 9:05 AM
100% Agreed!
(40) Anonymous, September 12, 2015 4:00 AM
Who are the other two "worst presidents" ?
(39) Susan Cohen, August 29, 2015 6:53 PM
We are Jews, Let us BE Jews
Let us not be like our enemies, whose humanity is so horribly lacking. They gloat over our innocent dead, and even though Carter is far from innocent, I can't bring myself to behave as they would, and cheer. No, I won't grieve, even though he was President of my country. But I will behave with dignity and let the truth speak for itself.
(38) Yossie, August 28, 2015 4:59 AM
I will shed no tears
When I heard that Jimmy Carter has cancer, my first thought was, may he have a long and painful death. Such an anti-semite deserves nothing better.
(37) Irving Resnick, August 27, 2015 9:53 PM
It never occured to me.
Despite his negative views of Israel,it never occurred to me that his cancer was G-d`s punishment. How pompous and self righteous that would be!! The fact that you have to write a big article condemning this kind of thinking,is disconcerting and sad. It reminds me of what some Jews thought about German Jews who perished in the holocaust;they were being punished for eating trafe and ,in general, living non-observant lives Absolutely disgusting and reprehensible thinking.
Susan Cohen, August 29, 2015 6:55 PM
I agree, Mr. Resnick
If this had been a Divine Punishment for antisemitism, it surely would have happened a lot sooner than age 90, & more directly after Carter's openly antisemitic statements!
(36) Jeff G. @ Toronto, August 26, 2015 11:35 PM
Divine judgment? Maybe.
Thank you, Rabbi, for your thoughtful piece.
It sickens me when I hear otherwise presumably rational people state with authority that such and such tragedy must have been due to a particular moral failing: "His house burned down and his family died? Well everyone knows he is a gonif and a cheat. It was clearly time for some direct divine payback. Hashem killed his family!"
I agree with you: We cannot know the will of Hashem and have no way of knowing why some sinners prosper and some saints get cancer; or even which bad men coincidentally get cancer and which bad men become ill because of their sins.
I also hear what you say about the lesson of the friends of Job... but Jimmy's no friend of ours! Also, in the case of Job, his friends merely ASSUMED his wrongdoing, because of his spate of 'bad luck'; while here, we know EXACTLY of what evils the former president stands accused.
Still, we can't say Hashem gave him brain cancer because he hates the Jews. But that doesn't mean we can't at least HOPE that Hashem is beginning Jimmy Carter's final reckoning in 'olam hazeh' (this world) as a precursor to what awaits him in Olam Habah (the world to come).
Don't misunderstand: I'm no sadist. The kind of suffering that Carter will likely experience as he dies of brain cancer, I wouldn't wish on anybody. But just in case he DID contract it through divine intervention, I'm not wishing it off him either.
(35) Ruth, August 26, 2015 8:57 PM
Boycott?
There are few people that I truly wish pain and suffering upon (pedophiles being at the top of that list). However, since Carter has vilified Israel as an "apartheid" state and encouraged the BDS movement, I think it would be interested to know if he has instructed his doctors not to use any medications, devices, treatments or therapies that were developed in Israel or by Israelis.
Because that pretty much leaves him with leeches and cupping.
(34) Anonymous, August 26, 2015 7:05 PM
Purim
Are we going to stop celebrating Purim? Mish'leiy (Proverbs) - repeated by the Tal'mud - tells us not to rejoice in the suffering of our enemies - our PERSONAL enemies. But would Rabbi Blech cancel the celebrations of Purim? I'm very happy haman is dead. Same for h*tl*r, araf*t, bin l*d*n - just wish they had died earlier.

(32) Diane B., August 26, 2015 1:53 PM
Carter has lived a blessed life
This is ridiculous. Children die from cancer. My 56 year old sister tragically died from pancreatic cancer. It is expected that most people by the age of 90 are going to die soon. This man has had a good, long life. He has been blessed with a long life, close knit family and a long and happy marriage. There is nothing tragic about a 90 year old looking at the end of his life. No one lives forever. Even an anti-Semite like Jimmy Carter.
(31) Devorah, August 26, 2015 8:10 AM
Carter reminds me of Martin Luther - founder of Lutherism
I recall that Martin Luther once loved the Jews and then started trying to convert us. When he saw that Jewish people were NOT interested in his christian message, THEN he came against us with all that he had and then started a huge anti-semitic movement and his church doctrine followed. Carter's attitude reminds me of Luther. Does anyone know more of Carter's dealings with us before he became president? Was he ever pro-Israel at any point in his life? If so, then what happened? There are so many christians that ARE pro-Israel. He just amazes me with his hatred towards us. Why?
Beverly Margolis, August 27, 2015 2:27 AM
Yup!
What is the difference between Luther and Carter? Nothing. They were and are unintelligent boors. Carter, however, as a world leader should have known better. Luther thought that if he got rid of the pope, Jews would run to their idols. Carter is just an unintelligent moron.
But with all of that will Carter's demise end Jew hate? Nope. Will anything stop it? We know better. We have yet another bunch of Jew haters on the horizon. Although Cruz claims to love Israel, he hates anything that is not Christian. He and his father and the governor of Texas wants to make Christianity THE government.
The only thing that is going to save our respective hides is for ALL OF US UNITING against our enemies. When Jews unite, we are impossible to fight. When we don't get all together, the haters have their way.
(30) Gary Rosen, August 26, 2015 5:29 AM
Carter's antisemitism
There is no question that Carter is a virulent anti-Semite and it goes far beyond his views on Middle East politics. I saw him being interviewed by Bill Moyers a few years ago and after piously berating Israel he began to castigate American Jews, mocking and deriding them sarcastically as the "Chosen People" with nothing but venom and hatred dripping from his mouth and flashing in his eyes. I could not believe that a former President of the United States was spouting off like David Duke. And to think I voted for him twice.
Carter hates Jews down to the marrow of his bones, as much or more than Buchanan, Duke and Farrakhan.
(29) Russ Gonnering, August 26, 2015 1:17 AM
AntiSemitism is unfortunately rational, but profoundly evil
AntiSemitism is indeed rational, but it is based upon profound, unrelenting and almost unspeakable evil. Quite simply, people hate the Jews because G-d loves them. G-d will bless those who bless Israel and curse those eh curse Israel. I don't think Carter's melanoma was caused by his overt antiSemitism. I also think his antiSemitism is more dangerous to him than the melanoma. Melanoma kills the body; antiSemitism kills the soul.
(28) Jon Jacob, August 25, 2015 10:20 PM
Tell him or tell others?
I'm no Talmud scholar but it appears from the quote that you can't oppress the sick person himself with such statements but that doesn't mean it isn't true or that you should say it to ithers. Perhaps it is the opposite - it is true but saying it to the sick person is hurtful and therefore forbidden. If I'm wrong, please enlighten me as to why?
(27) Rachel, August 25, 2015 9:58 PM
I don't think Carter is an evil man or necessarily antisemitic at heart. I see plenty of goodness in him (in much of the work he did after his presidency, such as building homes for Habitat for Humanity, etc.) I just think he sincerely believes Israel is at fault for the conflict and that the Palestinans are the victims because they are the weaker side (the "underdogs") just like millions of others who falsely believe that. In other words, I just think he is misguided and acted upon his misguided beliefs.
(26) Mario Permuth, August 25, 2015 9:23 PM
The difference
is that I really do not feel sorry for this antisemite and I do for the pious family members of the writer. The damage Carter did to Central America (not to say to the whole world) .... well ...
(25) barak, August 25, 2015 8:52 PM
Sowing and Reaping.
The former President has sown the seed and now its time for the harvest to begin. He has to repent and renounce the wrong and ask forgiveness and a ne page will start for his life. What so hard about that? Just Do It.

Punsihment
I find it very difficult to not express my joy (yes, JOY!) that Jimmy Carter will soon die a most likely painful death. He is an enemy of the stat of Israel and an enemy of the Jewish people. As an oncology nurse, I often tell my patients (and their families) that cancer is not a punishment of something they did during their lives. Yet I believe that Jimmy Carter is now paying the price.

I found this article to be a perfect portrayal of the truth of this situation. Yes Carter is objectionale but we are not in apostion to judge reward and punishment. Thank you for the clarity

Carter's Hate
Carter had no trouble judging Israel and the Jews. We have the same right to judge him. He put it out there. It works both ways.
Yehudit, August 26, 2015 7:30 PM
Right On!
David, I agree with you totally. Rabbi Blech, thank you so very much for clarifying that HaShem is the ONLY judge, and definitely not us human beings. Todah Rabah !
(20) tzippi, August 25, 2015 6:03 PM
Thank you, Rabbi Blech
What Rabbi Blech wrote should be obvious but unfortunately sometimes the obvious must be stated.
Why bad things happen to good and bad people and why good things happen to good and bad people are well beyond the scope of any Aish article but definitely is apropos to contemplate here.
(19) FBA, August 25, 2015 5:51 PM
Well said Rabbi
Many of my fellow Christians are quick to draw similar conclusions about suffering and illness as resultant of sin. Maybe, maybe not only the Lord will know and judge. However, I feel about President Carter's illness I not that at age ninety he has lived a long and full life. That however, would not allow me to excuse what I see as anti-semitism even as I honor his elderly status.
(18) Harold, August 25, 2015 5:41 PM
justice
carter's comment about Israel being an apartheid nation has set the world against Israel and is used by all the Israel haters. The amount of problems, and deaths, he has caused Israel and Jews is the reason to not wish him well. I think his illness is just justice for his actions and going out of his way to blast Israel with lies and hateful rhetoric. It is payback time for his self praise.
jimmy said his biggest regret during his presidency was having anything to do with Israel. The peace talks probably would have taken place between Israel and Egypt regardless of who was president due to Sadat's want for peace.
Mordecai, August 25, 2015 6:55 PM

Carter the typical sterio type Anti Semite
You R. BLECH are wrong....my mother was very religious woman...very.....the Nazis murdered over 50 of her immediate family....she was a sole survivor.....she died after suffering many years of colorector cancer....they cut out her intestines....her stomach etc....she never for one minute ever stopped believing in G.d ....she believed there was a reason....but Carter may he be tortured to death....is a rabid anti-Semite and if this is not Divine punishment....I will still take it.....You are not right. Dr. G.
(15) Neal Adler, August 25, 2015 5:14 PM
Great Article
Rabbi, while not shomer shabbos, my wife and I are reasonably observant Jews. As much as I despise President Carter, I wish him no personal harm. Having said that not only was he a terrible President, he met with Hamas an organization even the European Union wouldn't deal with them. Hamas has been responsible for the death of numerous innocent men, women, and children, even Palestinians. My mother battled cancer for 20 years and was one of the most courageous people I ever knew. You're probably more knowledgeable in this area than me, but I don't know that G-d caused his cancer due to his anti-semitism.
(14) Mike Motenko, August 25, 2015 4:55 PM
I am not a fan of Jimmy Carter, and never have been. But, and this is a big but, to suggest that his current condition is do to or stems from, any feeling he has about any individual or group of individuals, is g-d way, is not only uncalled for, but shows not only the depth of our ignorance, and a total and complete lack of human kindness. As mentioned, I am not a fan of Mr. Carter, but feel his politics, prejudices, show only that he is human and is liable and responsible for his short comings, when he meets his maker, and not a subject for my judgement.
(13) Marvin Cooper, August 25, 2015 4:53 PM
Carter, the Antisemite
I totally agree with your comments regarding Jimmy Carter, and yes I would put him in a dead tie Barak Obama. What a shame, that even when so close to death, Carter still spews his antisemitism
(12) Les sperling, August 25, 2015 4:35 PM
Religous believes.
Most dumbest thing I have ever heard. His illness sure was not caused by his religious beliefs,, Many people get cancer. Its not caused by antisemitisim.. His whole family had cancer. Thats what caused it... Anyone who believes otherwise is silly.
(11) Anonymous, August 25, 2015 4:12 PM
Well, at least he won't be sharing his views on Israel for much longer
I accept the author's view that considering Carter's cancer punishment for his anti-Israel and anti-Semitic "work" in the past several decades is misguided. But, if there is divine intervention here, perhaps it is the simple fact that given his disease, he will not be doing much more of this "work" in the future. As always, G-d works in mysterious ways.

Job suffered for his own faults
Job did not suffer for no reason. Job suffered due to his sin of not defending Israel to pharaoh, when Job was pharaoh's councilor
(9) Anonymous, August 25, 2015 3:40 PM
This needed to be said.
The Rabbi's comments about President Carter are wise, based on Scripture, and needed to be said. The Book of Job speaks loud and clear, warning us not to ascribe misfortunes of others to probable sin in their lives.

An attempt to be an advocate for the devil
No matter how antisemitic he is perceived to be, I am seeking to analyze the sequence of positive historic advantages for Israel as a consequence of the peace agreement that Carter brokered between Sadat and Begin. Look at today! Egypt is among the forefront nations pursuing strategic alliances with Israel. My attempt to distill a bottom line of my discussion is this: "G_D is the Omni-Engineer of the sequence of events driving history" .

Jews Would Vote For Him Again - He is a Democrat
No matter how foul the actions and track record of Mr. Carter or the current president, American Jews would vote for them again for president, if they could.
For Democrat American Jews who profess to love and support Israel, and yet vote for Democrats, they are like chickens who vote for Colonel Sanders. Character appears not to be an issue when it comes time to vote liberal ant-Israel, America-hating Socialist Democrats into office.
I paint with a broad brush here, because it is an appropriate brush to use in reference to this article. American Jews would overwhelmingly support Mr. Carter if he could run again. Likewise with Mr. Obama. And they will vote for Ms. Clinton, even though she is Obama in a skirt. Liberal ideology is the religion of most American Jews.

He's 90
Besides what you write Carter is 90 years old gimmee a break if this was for anti-semitism, etc. he would have died young
Mike, August 25, 2015 4:26 PM
other poits
right, if it is so simple that would have been the case. But we see other examples as well, such as good things happening to bad people, and bad things happening to good people.
When King Solomon prayed to God an God gave him great wisdom, making him the wisest person on earth, this may have been a blessing but it was also huge responsibility because the more someone knows and understands the more he is held accountable.
In the case of Carter, I do think that his -actually long life (90 years) is not only a blessing. On the contrary, given how he is, that long a lifespan enables him to be anti-Israel for a long time, and making sure that there will be no doubt that he really doesn't want to be any other way.
The covenant with Abraham says that those who bless [essentially the Jewish people] will be blessed by God and those who curse [essentially the Jewish people] will be cursed by God.
Carter was given ample opportunity to bless the Jewish people, and he squandered it all to be against them, and he himself will make sure that he will merit Gehinom.

(1) Anonymous, August 24, 2015 11:55 PM
Harav Blech basis his idea not to claim Carter's cancer on his antisemitism for two reasons. for one, it's Onas D'varim, secondly, righteous people also have cancer. I disagree.
First, Onas D'varim, not to insult anyone, even if perhaps they deserve it) is applicable only to Jews and not to non-Jews. (Not that someone should just insult non-Jews, but we can say they're not protected under the same unequivocal protection.)
Second, the Rama (CM 248:1) only applies this to the G-d fearing.
Thirdly, this may only apply where there is no known sin, but when we know one, then we may suggest the connection. This we find a precedence in the case of R' Huna' wine spoiling in Brachos 5b.
Of course, we can really never know why to righteous. Sometimes, things don't make sense to us. However, when it make sense, like when the wicked suffer, why can;t we assume it.
I agree that it doesn't make sense to point to Carter as a proof of divine punishment, because even the righteous suffer in the same way. Also, you would assume that it wouldn't take until he's 90.
However, I can't object on moral grounds, if someone claims that cancer is not a sign of sin, however, if we know the guy's an anti-Semite, we have no questions on why he should have it.
