As the daughter of Holocaust survivors, my nervous system is on high alert. The growing rate of antisemitism in the world feels dangerously familiar. Am I ignoring the same warning signs that so many of Europe’s Jews did in the early 1930s?
Before the pandemic, when I traveled to Georgia for vacation, I had no idea that I would come face to face with my personal history in a small, privately-owned military museum.
Southern hospitality is not a myth, nor is its reputation exaggerated. As soon as I walked through the museum door on that hot and humid August morning and felt the relief of the air-conditioned room, a gentleman stepped forward to hand me a bottle of chilled water. I gratefully accepted it. At that moment, I could not have predicted the chills I would feel later when leaving the premises in haste and confusion.
This man introduced himself by name and let me know that the museum was his. He gave me an overview of the exhibits and walked alongside me for several minutes as I started the tour. I stopped at all the display cases, viewing the artifacts, and reading about various wars the US had fought. Before leaving, I wanted to say goodbye to the owner, just as a guest might do before leaving a crowded reception hosted by a friend. I approached the front desk to thank the proprietor for the tour he had given me earlier.
Laura*, the woman standing behind the glass showcase that served as the front desk, introduced herself as the proprietor’s wife. I thanked her for the tour and we exchanged friendly chitchat.
After a few moments, Laura stopped talking and turned to her right and left, as if to make sure no one was watching her. She gave me a conspiratorial look and said, “Let me show you something we have but don’t put on display.”
Reaching under the counter, she pulled out an old, worn leather wallet, opened it and spread out its contents. I found myself looking at Deutschmarks, coins and photographs. She spread out the faded black and white pictures so I could get a clear view of each one.
“My uncle found this wallet in the woods during the war,” she said with a thrill in her voice. She pointed to a picture of five young officers wearing Nazi uniforms and began kvelling!
She talked about their loyalty to the Führer. She didn’t hide her feelings – it was obvious that she felt fondly towards them and these pictures made her proud. This confused me. Her uncle was an American soldier fighting the Nazis in Europe. Why was she telling me how handsome these boys looked? The longer she talked, the clearer it became that the woman I was talking to was a Nazi sympathizer.
Her mouth kept moving, but I stopped listening. My mind was racing and the voice in my head was shouting at me.
Say something! Don’t just stand there politely! You have to confront her. You’re stunned but say something!
“Excuse me,” I heard myself stutter. “Excuse me if I look at things differently. My father was a Holocaust survivor. He spent five years in the concentration camps. His family, my family, was murdered by soldiers like the boys you’re pointing to in these pictures. So you can understand why I don’t see them the same way you do.”
In another time and place, Laura could have been my grandmother’s neighbor, the one who told the Nazis where my grandmother and her daughters were hiding
When Laura saw the look on my face, she swept all the pictures together, as if they were a deck of cards and the game was over. Without another word, I turned, left the building, and made my way back to the car, shaken and upset. I was shaken by Laura’s attitude and upset with myself that I hadn’t said more.
I sat in my car and played in my mind, over and over again like a looping video clip, the encounter I had in the museum - the friendly greeting, the Southern hospitality, the tour, the friendly talk with a Nazi sympathizer, then finally my response to her.
It was the 21st century and I had come face to face with a Nazi sympathizer. Why hadn’t I displayed more rage? As I thought about it more, it dawned on me that in another time and place, Laura could have been my grandmother’s neighbor, the one who told the Nazis where my grandmother and her daughters were hiding… the neighbor who stood by and watched as my grandmother and her children were shot at point blank range…the neighbor who was congratulated for a job well done.
When facing a traumatic event, we respond by using one of three defenses: Fight, flight, or freeze. Each of us have our own way of responding to a threatening situation and my typical response is to freeze. At first, when I heard Laura talking about the Nazi soldiers, I froze in shock. Then, the voice in my head commanded me to act. I could have said more, but the little I did say took every ounce of courage I had. I looked evil straight in the eye and confronted it. In that moment, I converted the freeze response to a fighting one.
Like many Jews, I worry that the rising antisemitism may engulf the world again. I worry that even the strongest protest, in whatever form it takes, or whichever body espouses it, is not sufficient to quash it.
My anxiety doesn’t usually climb to unmanageable levels, but I do have my moments. And during my very worst moments, I think about my family’s history in the Holocaust, and tremble in fear– it’s the fear that my grandmother felt as she stood with her two daughters, facing the Nazi who killed them all.
But then I remind myself that I do have it within me to face evil, if necessary, and fight.

Antisemitism
Antisemitism has been been lifting its ugly head for sometime, since it ran
rampant some time ago. Slowly each and every day, another Jew is singled out somewhere in someway, until someday all Jews awake to a
nightmare again. One can feel the hate in the air, the blame of most wrongs are beginning to be placed on the Jews. And there’s no walking away from it or even consider hiding. This is why hate in the USA is getting larger by the day. People have chosen sides, there will never be unity, because more people than few want to be on the greedy side, the sinful side, the blame-it-On-the-loser’s side. G d help us, but we’ll prevail again.

Thank you for airing this experience.
Michelle,
It is important that we respond, appropriately, when we find ourselves by complete surprise, in the situation you were in. I am living mitzvot and am about thirteen months along my path to to conversion to conservative Judaism. I have been blessed beyond measure, in ways that astonish me.
Before I ever set foot into a shul I witnessed an incident on a local bus. Two men on the bus were talking to each other from several isles away such that everyone on the bus would hear, and one blamed the Jews for the start of WW2. I was enraged at the stupidity of this, maybe even more than the bigotry. I knew that if I remained silent I would be ashamed of myself for way too long. So I engaged and challenged. Honestly though, I can't recall when I have witnessed a situation like that ever. I have heard common stereotypes going back to high school, mostly from friends and acquaintances, Jews included, and maybe I have been a little too sanguine at those times. I have to say that I think that expressions of racism have been far more common in my experience.
That said, I think we should not assume that this ugly disease is spreading among our gentile neighbors, or that it is becoming more malignant. That assumption can certainly result in Jews withdrawing more and more and will only make things worse. In fact, we should be engaging our friends about this more than we otherwise might and we can't be shy about engaging appropriately in response to antisemitism when unexpectedly, there it is.
As always, the Torah tells us what to do. Two words from Hashem that appear over and over again in so many circumstances are really the key to seeing and acting appropriately, "fear not".

It's here to stay.
Great article!!! I share the author's thoughts. During the course of my life, I've had to confront Nazy sympathizers. My usual argument is "yes, I would not have been born as my parents would have been killed in Europe, but YOU would be a slave under the regime you so much admire, because you have (insert here the physical features of the person in question). That ends the argument. Once I was confronted by such a person who happened to be blond and blue-eyed. I told her that the real Aryans were from India and had nothing to do with either blond hair or blue eyes. That was the end of the argument. Perhaps for some it would be useful to watch "The Man in the High Castle", which is an alternate scenario of what would have happened if the Nazis would have won the Second World War.

found a wallet in a woods
This proprietor found the wallet in the woods, looked through it. It's like a child that found something forbidden and shared it with a friend. She knows it's wrong. She is not Nazi. She just shared the find, saw soldiers as human being. In my opinion pointing handsomeness does not show admiration. IT shows that enemy can look pretty. War is terrible and many people who want nothing to do with war die. She might have been wondering about people on the photo if they were so bad. BTW, my family suffer during Holocaust , I emigrated to America and seem to understand Americans better than you "therapist". In my estimation, you are just looking for trauma.

You showed Courage not shame
Michelle, we all look back and FEEL we should have...( fill in the blank, usually big and heroic). I hope you can free yourself from the shame. Life’s great deeds are usually a culmination of many small good deeds. I see that you spoke up. You spoke truth. It is a long journey back from dark places and takes many bearing witness of truth to change someone’s mind and lifestyle. The anger of her evil perspective is just. But, I hope you do not let it corrupt your powerful response to her evil position. I would offer ‘well done’. Maybe there is more you can do, like spreading the word, which you have done in this article. Pray that their ignorance and hate does not get spread. Pray for a cloud of truth to descend upon them and turn them toward good. I will join you. Shalom Walt

Why not expose them ?
I appreciate your article, but why not expose the person who works at the museum on social media. It’s no longer acceptable to be polite it is imperative to expose the ignorance and to educate these individuals on the facts. Call out the museum to make a change and educate those who represent the establishment, do this on social media. If the museum worker wants to be nazi sympathizer in her own home that’s her ignorance, where she works is not acceptable. She needs some basic education and failing that maybe not work where she interacts with people period.

Shaming people in public is not allowed for Jews
It's compared to murder in the Talmud. Reproaching the woman was correct, and notifying her superior to get her to change would also be correct, but public shaming is not.

National socialism
Nazis were socialists. America has more to be afraid of with so-called socialists than these remnants and of national supremacy. In fact, it was Stalin in 1933 that ordered German communists party to support the National SOCIALISTS (nazis) and that propelled hitler to power. For the next few years he and his counterpart in Kremlin carried out much the same policies and were friends in dividing and conquering the world until Stalin’s intentions became clear when Red Army stopped a hundred km from Romania’s oil fields, the main supplier of fuel for German war machine. German invasion into Russia was preemptive, Stalin’s army was scheduled to begin its own campaign only weeks later. Today, American Jews are in more danger of assimilation than of physical destruction. This new Holocaust is carried on under various banners, social justice, some lives matter and others don’t, “equity”, lgbtqabcdefg, etc. White supremacists are surely a formidable force, but a negligent one compared to the hostility of the left and their dangers to us. But the most dangerous to Jews are the Jews themselves, those posing as frumm with their trimmed beards and their values curtailed for the sake of the moment. Any of those now censoring the Aish publications? Those are the real culprits, they know no shame. Recognize yourselves?

You just be kidding. Check ADL numbers and see how large your benign “conservative” remnants are. You need to understand that monsters have hidden within socialist lines using those apparatus as their platforms to do evil.
You really need to redo a lot of your thinking and knowledge.

Little Museum in Coastal Ga
I happen to know where you were, and you were correct letting this woman know that her ‘treasure’ is not really what she thinks it is, there are STILL people in that city that think it was a great fine thing to fight to keep people enslaved (fooled into thinking it was about ‘states rights’...Sorry there John C. Calhoun- but in the declaration to leave the union it spells out explicitly that it IS about slavery)... to sum up, this woman has probably been bottle fed the ideas from the society she grew up in that it was fine to like the ‘boys who fought in the war’. She is wrong.

Important story
The story you related is a very important incident. Our sages tell us that anti-Semitism is G-D’Souza way of keeping the Jewish people religious. When we realize that the other nations of the world Have resentment, dislike, hate, and even desire to murder us, We will understand that we are meant to be a nation apart, to be the nation of God and not assimilate amongst the Gentile nations. Certainly one should protest and not remain silent in the face of evil. However there is nothing that we can do to alleviate Jew-hatred/anti-Semitism from the world because God specifically engineers it. In every generation the Gentile nations rise up against the Jewish people to annihilate them but as long as we are loyal to God he saves us. We say this every year during the Pesach Seder. V’hee She’amda...
Bonnie, January 27, 2021 10:48 PM
Gentile am I ..........yes.
Daniel, not every gentile are against Israel, nor do we hate them....Our school teacher from grade one always taught us that to respect the Jews, the bible stories of Father Abraham? Samson? David? Solomon? Daniel in the lion's den...David and Goliath ...so on .....we believed these stories, cherished them even as we speak.....may I remind you of Rahab the harlot who history states she married an Israelite and is of descent of King David...... She was of gentile tribe? .Jew &Gentile...because she believed she and her family were saved........because of faith and our love for God's word ...knowing He is of no respecter of person.......He states "I love them who love me...and those that do evil I lightly esteem ". May God bless you. I pray for the peace of Israel ( just a gentile's point of view....Shalom.

addendum
Hello Bonnie,
I apologize if you were hurt by my words. I did not mean that every non Jew is anti-semitic. Rather, that G-d has specifically designed that in every generation there is a very large number of people / nations who hate, seek to harm and kill the Jewish people (if they were just given the opportunity). If you look through the annals of Jewish history, you would be hard pressed to find even one generation from the time of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem where Jews were not being hurt, attacked or killed, aside from being forever hated. It is a blessing in disguise for the Jewish nation so that we will not attempt to act, assimilate, intermarry or compromise the Torah in any way to gain recognition or benefits from the other nations of the world. Of course though, there are many wonderful and righteous individuals amongst the other nations.
Bonnie, February 4, 2021 2:00 AM
Much appreciate your response
A promise made to Abraham....God said: Abram....You shall be a blessing to all nation.....those that bless you I will bless...those that curse you? ( like Iran? ) I will curse! ........they seemed to be blinded in the True God?...thus, the nations that forget God will be cast into hell.... Shalom, I pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Thank you, nevertheless.

I understand that your upset, but definitely can't relate. Being a little older now and having researched ww2 thoroughly I can also understand the ladies enthusiasm. In my opinion, she was gawking at the historical significance of having a german wallet in her possession. There were lots of young men on all sides. Many committed and were ordered to commit atrocious acts. Many on all sides did courageous things as well. Reading accounts, I gain a great appreciation for the german army and its professionalism during the war. Forgotten soldier, blood red snow, black edelweiss, in deadly combat, fur volk and fuhrer to name a few. Some of these were wehrmacht, some were SS army. I think calling this lady a nazi sympathizer might've been a bit harsh, but I wasn't in your shoes during the conversation. Not everyone who has invested time and consideration of ww2, and on the german side is a nazi sympathizer. I for example call myself an enthusiast. Being a nazi sympathizer in my opinion would be someone who would blame others for the atrocities the nazis commited. This lady didn't seem to do that. You never mentioned whether the soldiers were ss or regular army either. There is a difference. And then there were very few as units which actually provided guard at concentration camps. Ukranian ss, Leon de grelles ss. I think maybe you might've missed an opportunity to learn and grow. I hope this comment helps.
LarryB, January 27, 2021 2:18 PM
Orders are no excuse
In a sane world, and the German army was no more insane than any other army, a soldier would not murder anyone no matter what the order or the price to be paid. As a true soldier, He would protect everyone in his country or he was nothing but a murderous thug. Many will stick up for the individuals/soldiers, maybe because of the fear or what they were taught as children but we are responsible for what we believe because we can question and we can choose. Every soldier in the German army could have gone AWOL.
Chris cole, January 27, 2021 3:24 PM
Reply to Larry
Let me say I think the holocaust was a terrible thing and we should study so as not to recreate the event.
To the comment that orders are not an excuse. Orders are good and bad right. The. Soldier's executing the orders probably shouldn't be blamed in most scenarios. In cases of desertion for example , deserters are shot by common and fellow soldiers . Every army does it, and there are cases where the executor should have pity because the deserter might've had cause to leave. Losing a family member, no one to run the farm etc...but it's necessary otherwise the masses would leave and nothing would get accomplished. Like the allies winning ww2.
Or in the german army for example ( which you really have to admire) . One unit would be ordered to hold the line in a certain location. After fighting, 3/4 's of the unit would be lost. No ammo left , no food and no people, yet the order is still to hold. In the german army on many first hand accounts the line was hold with tons of improvisation and willpower because the soldiers knew help would come and orders would be conveyed when the situation changed. What you saw in action was trust that they would prevail. The soldier's trusted the command and superior's and relied upon orders to prevail.
Orders would be bad if a soldier was ordered to kill a child or old man because of race or faith, but if they came from the previous scenario I see how they could trust their superiors.
I think we are talking apples and oranges though, because the camp guards generally didn't come from the frontline. They were a separate group.
LarryB, January 27, 2021 6:23 PM
I don't admire any military that's conquering other nations for gain
Germany was not defending itself. It was conquering other nations which means it was murdering citizens wether soldiers or not, to take control. Many germans in other countries wanted to join hitler. Yes the soldiers should be blamed for following any bad orders. Murder is murder whether someone tells you to or not. The hardships (you so admire) that the german soldiers experienced are only due to their conquering another nation and putting themselves at risk for gain. All the soldiers had plenty opportunity to desert, yes risk their lives, but in the end if you have no followers you have no leaders.

Your dismissal of wermacht atrocities really does suggest the fact your studies of the Wermacht are somewhat sketchy or you are prepared to ignore much of what actually went on, especially on the Eastern and Balkan Fronts.
The Whermacht may have been a well trained military force but they in the process of their military actions professionally and deliberately committed mass rape and mass murder.

If nazis sympathizers are the obvious evil there are others who hiding under the appearance of fighting on behalf of "oppressed".... they are often called themselves Antifa or BLM but in reality they don't fight Nazi or racial injustice... no... they are nothing but Marxist Collectivists who hate Jews often calling them Zionists to hide their antisemitism. Those people are a lot more common then old style Nazis and a lot more dangerous.

Not alone in fear
I've faced only mild antisemitism a few times in my life. But that doesn't stop me from being a little wary. When I was 12, we moved to a rural area. Someone secretly left a flyer in our paper box inviting my family to a Klan rally. As a driving teenager going to get a haircut, I saw Klansmen in a parade, in robes and dunce caps. I was afraid. As an adult, a coworker once suggested I should "go back to... wherever." Another coworker suggested I got my business degree because I am Jewish and like money. And a man in a department store saw my tzitzit, then the company-issued winter jacket I was wearing, and told me I must not have come from a good Jewish family because I have to work for a living. Having a sukkah has drawn attention from neighbors, but out of curiosity, fortunately. But I am grateful to now have a privacy-fenced back yard. This Hanukkah, having moved into town, I put my Hanukkiah at the storm door of the enclosed porch facing the street. I was a tad worried but decided to be brave. Thankfully, all was good. I wear a yarmulke - under a cap. I recently met a Muslim gentleman. We found we had much in common, including wariness of others. As a character in a movie warned, "Knowing one's neighbors is one thing. Knowing their politics is another." But as another character in another movie put it, "I must go everywhere alone and unafraid, or they will believe all they suspect of me." Finally, I told a man wearing a T-shirt declaring, "I am an essential worker" that "We are ALL essential. Nazis decided who was essential or not." Who are others to decide who is and who isn't essential? How frightening! Don't berate yourself for not giving a stronger response. You were caught off-guard. Besides, being too strong risks steeling their resolve. That you said something at all made a difference as the woman put away the pictures. She'll think twice now. You are not alone in fear - in feeling it, or in facing it. For Messiah we eagerly wait. May He speedily come!

Scary and empowering experience
The writer clearly was able to stand up and speak up to a Natzi sympathizer and anti semite. I wonder how many others she has shown her pictures to. Is she trying to attract more sympathizers? If this is a public museum, which it's hard to believe is in GA, where I lived for 46 years, I would contact the Anti-Defamation League. So sorry you had to experience this but maybe good will come of it.

Regarding Georgia and That South
I always believed that if you are racist, chances are you are anti-semitic. That was before I moved to the US from Canada and met many racist Jews. However, I have a co-worker who is white working class from Atlanta suburbs, and has many relatives in rural Georgia. She insists that racism in Georgia does not equate to anti-semitism and that to her family, if you date a Jew, you won the lottery. That dating Jews was a good thing. It is a perspective I never heard before and adds color to the culture of the former North American slave lands.
I still cannot tolerate Jewish Republicans. Again, the Canadian Conservative Party points the way to responsible conservativism in a multicultural democracy. To support the GOP in its current form is destructive. However, a % of the human population is authoritarian and that includes the Jewish community. At least its only 21% of US Jews and not more.
Silky, January 27, 2021 1:32 AM
Why are you better than Laura?
David B, if you truly "cannot tolerate Jewish Republicans" what makes you different than Laura who cannot tolerate all Jews? That you CAN tolerate Jews that think as you do?
If we Jews can't learn to tolerate each other, even if we don't think alike, than we are doomed. No wonder Moshiach isn't here yet.
David B, January 27, 2021 1:54 AM
Not better than anyone
I cannot tolerate anti-democratic thought, not their being. Are you Jewish yourself? Normally, we do not speak of messiahs, that is the focus of the very orthodox, who would not be commenting here, or Christian Evangelicals of the US. The ones who say nothing when brown children are taken from their parents at the border in an effort to send a "message" to would be immigrants. Please spare me, a healthy democracy is based on rational thought, not religious fantasies and neglect of common sense and common humanity.
Anonymous, February 3, 2021 11:09 AM
Republican Jews
Republican Jews are not antidemocratic, and nor are Republicans. I don't know if you are really Jewish, because of course we speak about bringing Moshiach, including in this website everywhere. I invite you to look around.

Disturbing changes in the Democratic Party
To David:
It’s true that there is a far right fringe group on the Republican side, but they are small in number and not tolerated by the mainstream Republican Party. However, the Jew-haters in the Democratic Party are not only tolerated, they are rising stars in the Party and are very much in the mainstream. (Their names have already been mentioned by other commentators.) This is why I, as a registered Democrat for almost all of my adult life, became a Republican. The biggest thing that concerns me about a large number of Democrats now is their growing disdain for the two party system and for people who disagree with them. Hillary started it by calling people who disagreed with her “Deplorables.” A Democratic Congresswoman urged Democrats to harass Republicans in restaurants, grocery stores and other public places, as well as in their homes, and a number of people did just that and were proud of it. Suddenly, free speech is no longer tolerated in some venues. The mainstream media, which should be reporting facts in the news sections and keeping biased articles on the Opinion and Op Ed pages, have become cheering sections for one point of view, often repeating lies and distortions in their news items, even when those lies have been disproved. This is the true harbinger of fascism in our country and is very disturbing.
Nancy, January 28, 2021 12:27 PM
To Bunny Shuch
I too am a lifelong Democrat who recently voted Republican for a local Assembly Woman. Re: The far right group being small in number. Here is a question for you: How small in number were they just over two weeks ago? What would you call the person who wore the t-shirt 6 million WE? Yes, I intensely dislike the same Democrats you are alluding to. We have to speak up when we hear their horrendous commentary, but this does NOT mean that ALL Democrats have gone to genhenim in a hand basket. The Republicans are not the party of Eisenhower and sadly, the Democrats are not the party of Kennedy, but I am not ready to throw either party under the bus. None of us should be. Re: Making aliyah. It is beyond wonderful and I am so proud of my friends who have done so. However, not everyone is in the same position to make aliyah. We need to be understanding there as well. Nonetheless, I plan to visit Israel once again as soon as it is safe to do so!
David B, January 28, 2021 1:38 PM
To Nancy and Bunny
I come from a Zionist family many of whose members went on Aliyah and helped get Netanya going.
I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, I live in NYS now.
I studied the holocaust extensively. I have 3 university degrees.
I find your statements on the Democratic Party laughable. While a terrible political party in a poorly democratic system, it is still far better than the Republican Party that is disgusting, especially when contrasted to its Canadian conservative political party counterpart. Yes, there is a world out there and many other humans are far brighter than you. The GOP is also addicted to lies which are extensively parroted here.
Over 30 members of congress sitting on the Democrat side are Jewish. Maybe 1 Republican is Jewish in either House of Congress. Some yutz decided these people are not Jewish. I suspect evangelicals from “That South” believes such insulting nonsense.
79% of Jewish US voters voted for the Democrats. How is it you and the “Christian” Evangelicals know better? Many of those “Christians” post here and misrepresent themselves as Jews. They lie as a matter of habit as they will not look at themselves, but have to pester others. We Jews are but objects of their religious fantasies. It is truly insulting. You right-wing Jews use them as they use us. It is pathetic and disggusting.
You are wrong and ensconced in cocoons of propaganda. I pray for you (to use a condescending Amedikan Christian phrase).
David B, January 28, 2021 2:15 PM
Jews elected to the US Congress (House and Senate, possums)
Although Jews make up 2 percent of the U.S. population, nearly 7 percent of the new Congress is Jewish, with 37 Jews among the total of 535 lawmakers. In the Senate, the 9 Jewish members comprise 9 percent of that body; 28 Jews comprise 5 percent of the House. The record was the 1993 Congress, which included 51 Jews — nearly 10 percent of the total.
All of the Jews in the Senate are Democrats, as are all but two in the House. The Republican exceptions are Reps. Lee Zeldin and David Kustoff, from New York and Tennessee, respectively. They are the only non-Christian Republicans in the Congress, according to a report by Pew.

Which party proposed going after Trump administraction employees to make sure they can't work again?
Which party suggested reeducation camps for Republican voters? The "democratic" Democrats, who don't believe in freedom of speech anymore either!

Well written. I visit Georgia often. Is it possible to know where the museum is located. I understand the author's behavior. it is shocking but not uncommon. I immigrated to US many decades ago, and still have an accent so people are more secretive about their views, but I still encounter many meeting like those, and my encounter is similar
(42) Anonymous, January 26, 2021 8:33 PM
Not much of a fight
Although a perfectly good response, I don't see it as much of a fighting back against this Nazi sympathizer as you do. I think that she merely brushed you off as another "one of those Jews" and learned nothing other than to be more careful to whom she shows her treasured items. Perhaps you could at least publicize the name and location of the museum so that people who do not wish to support this sympathizer may avoid visiting this place
Tamara, January 26, 2021 11:09 PM
Caught off guard
I think you did great! Sounds like it caught you very off guard and you probably felt shocked. I remember the first time antisemitism hit me in the face — up front and personal. You are not expecting it and are not prepared for it! Bravo for you to have said anything. I hope you never are confronted with this type behavior again....if you are, you will say what’s in your heart and it will be brilliant!
(41) Shira, January 26, 2021 8:00 PM
Bless
I know that feeling.
thank you for the great mitzvah of calmly speaking truth to lies. just the fact of it was all that was needed. if you had ranted, or said more, it would have been mere emotion. you showed real courage in the face of fear. May you be a blessing to us and to our maker

Avoiding divisiness
"They hated Trump because he was pro-Religion, pro-Israel, pro-G-d, pro-morality, anti-murdering babies as they are being born(!)."
Pro-Religion and pro-G-d: Trump calmly stated in an interview that he never felt the need to ask G-d for any kind of forgiveness (although he did claim to believe in G-d) and is not known to belong to any religious congregation.
Pro-Israel: Let's give credit where credit is due, his administration has done beneficial things for Israel. However, he is on the record as having done this for his evangelical voting block. He called Jews who votes for Democrats disloyal, said some Jews "don't love Israel enough", and addressed a meeting of the Israeli Council by saying "A lot of you are in the real estate business, because I know you very well. You’re brutal killers, not nice people at all. But you have to vote for me—you have no choice. You’re not gonna vote for Pocahontas, I can tell you that. You’re not gonna vote for the wealth tax. Yeah, let’s take 100% of your wealth away! Some of you don’t like me. Some of you I don’t like at all, actually. And you’re going to be my biggest supporters because you’re going to be out of business in about 15 minutes if they get it"
Pro-morality: not sure anything in Trump's life pre/during the presidency justify this statement. He has repeatedly cheated on his spouses (including while one of them was pregnant), speaks vilely about women, and routinely belittles anyone who disagree with him resorting to filthy and disrespectful insults.
anti-murdering babies: I have no idea what his personal views truly are as this topic is heavily tied to courting the evangelical votes.
--> Honestly, I think anti-semitism is growing from both the left and the right. The sooner we realize this and avoid getting stuck into democrat/republican divisiveness, the better. Of course we have different views on many issues, but let's never forget Klal Yisrael :)
(39) Jacqueline Cabessa Redlich, January 26, 2021 7:47 PM
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing the story, feelings and thoughts. We do have to be aware of this very real rise of antisemitism. It is real and it is more widespread than we think. And, we do have to fight back!

Hateful people once would hide their guiltyness.
I’m outraged! How dare anyone condone that evil nazi regime. Oh!
(36) Marc, January 26, 2021 7:09 PM
I cannot understand how the curator of this museum and “Laura” could be married, unless he too was a Nazi sympathizer. People who are overt Nazis are “easier” to deal with then the those who are sympathizers in secret. Thank G-d, I did not lose family members in the war, but I would have been shaken none the same. How can these people be curators of this museum? In conclusion, I found the essay very interesting.
Bunny Shuch, January 28, 2021 8:46 AM
"Laura" and her husband are the owners.
I think the author said that they are the owners of this private museum.
(35) Alex Slabo, January 26, 2021 6:34 PM
You are a courageous Jewish Woman G-d bless you
(34) Avraham Sonenthal, January 26, 2021 6:29 PM
Michelle, get a gun
Michelle (the author of this article), you froze when you were in the museum, and didn't know what to do. What if you are confronted by a Nazi sympathizer that wants to kill you? You need training in self defense, and preferably in the use of firearms. There are many excellent programs. I recommend you look into Front Sight Firearms training Academy in Nevada, and their 40 hour defensive handgun course. But you probably have great courses near you as well. This country has been great to us, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the US for allowing Jews complete freedom, and even allowing Jews to buy and train with firearms. Michelle if you are in a state that allows concealed carry then get your permit. George S Patton, one of the greatest of the WWII generals, hated Jews and believed that they were subhuman. FDR turned away the 750 Jews on the St Louis knowing this would cause them to be executed. The list goes on. This is a great country but one that has not always been friendly to the Jews. There are people in this world who hate Jews, including many Americans, and including at least two members of the House of Representatives. Get used to it. The only answer is to be ready to respond with violence if needed. And remember this old but true saying: Violence is usually not the answer, BUT, when it IS the answer, its the ONLY answer.
Anonymous, January 26, 2021 10:20 PM
I hope you are not advising violence
To be clear: the author chose to visit the museum. While rightly horrified by “Laura’s” attitude, she was not threatened with imminent bodily harm. To brandish a gun, much less fire on the proprietor, would have been a crime.
Anonymous, January 28, 2021 8:48 AM
Avraham was misunderstood
Avraham was suggesting what to do, should Michelle ever be in a situation when a Nazi sympathizer was trying to kill her. He was not suggesting she should have used a gun in the museum.
(33) Anonymous, January 26, 2021 6:22 PM
Alex, a thousand on it never happened
Yes, I know there is evil in the world, we don't need those who make up stories so they to can be a victims. What the heck is wrong with you, this cheapens the real anti-Semitism that is real.

Touring Germany
I was in Germany to tour the country with a friend. I had time in Marburg before meeting up and went into an antique shop. I saw in a display case, Nazi paraphernalia. Germany, a democracy, nevertheless bans display of such ugly things. I called the proprietor and protested and he was very apologetic...after all, I told him I was Jewish and thinking of calling the police. He begged me not to and grabbed them all up saying he’d rid the shop of them. I left, thinking that they're probably already back on display. Again in Bremen, Germany, I had dinner with friends on the picturesque, Böttcherstrasse. When we left the restaurant, just across the narrow, maybe 7-foot-wide famous street was a shop. It was nighttime, so it was closed. Looking in the window, we saw a Nazi flag! My friends were utterly embarrassed that I should see this and they went inside the restaurant to the police, who arrived immediately. Right in front of us, the police broke the door-lock and carried the flag away. One more story: in a German village one night, after having my dinner, I was looking at shop windows. Inside, in a display that I could see was a "Jewish Star" pendant. For me, this was…without question…a Jewish Star that was taken from a victim of the Holocaust only to appear so many decades later in some shop to be the source of income for the owner. I had to “rescue” it! The next morning, I went there at the hour that the sign hanging on the door said was opening time. I was determined to “rescue” that beloved symbol of my “Jewish victim” and, by my purchase, at least “return” it to a Jewish heart…of mine. I waited and waited despite the fact that it would make me late for meeting up with others. It was in a time before cellphones, so I could not explain my lateness. Finally, at one o’clock in the afternoon, the owner opened the door. I went inside and asked see the Jewish Star. I looked closely at it and, lo’ and behold…on its underside were the words “Made in Israel”!

Jewhate. Judeophobia
Anti-Semitism is an old respectable term for Jew-hate. A Semitic person such as an Arab is not anti-Semitic, that person is a Jew-hater. Please use correct terminology as hate is not respectable .
This young lady courageously shamed many Jews including those holding responsible posts in Jewish organisations. It is time and always has been for terrified Jews to learn how to fight and show you are not afraid. Walk erect and learn Krav Maga or other forms of defence.
The so called right wing extremists are no different to the left wing extremists. Progressive or Socialist Democrats are no different to their Jew hating Nazis.
Remember Nazi is the shortened term for the German National Socialist workers Party. Please note the term Socialist. The difference between the extreme leftwing international Socialists hate for Israel and Jews and the extreme right wing National Socialists hate for Israel is a small term. Inter!
The original Nazis were termed as leftwing Socialists but when Germany attacked the Soviet Union I.e. Operation Barbarossa, the terminology was changed to right wing to differentiate between two forms of Socialism. For example how many types of Communism are there?
Time to wake up and smell the coffee folks As a Brit/Israeli Jew I fear for the USA. Russia expected to implode. Under Socialism the same is now expected of the USA, sadly.
(29) Anonymous, January 26, 2021 5:28 PM
Publish the name of the museum
If it’s a public museum, why not publish the name? Why allow more patronage to that place?
(28) David Ben Horin, January 26, 2021 4:34 PM
Get Out of There Michelle!
You know why this lady was so "proud" of the Nazi soldiers, even as they fought to kill her grandfather?
Because there is so much anger in America. It doesn't matter IF the "Jews killed Trump" or the "Jews control the US media" or the "Jews destroyed America"
We all KNOW that is ridiculous.
But so are all of hitler's claims against us.
It doesn't matter what the truth is to people who are angry. The only information they acknowledge are those facts that validate their rage.
There are 74 million people who feel like SOMEONE stole their president. It doesn't matter what actually happened.
These are people who might just reconsider whether or not the Nazis did the "right thing."
As abhorrent as we see this escalating nightmare, our own history tells us that this is how it happens. In Ukraine. In USSR. In Nazi Germany.
Please Michelle. Exercise the better part of valor.
Sell everything you have and move to Israel.
This plague of the earth will get worse. The declining economic situation for millions of people and the rage machine of social media guarantees it.
Come home. No matter how much antisemitism there is, Hashem watches over the Land of Israel from the first day of the year to the last.
We can fight back here, and with Hashem's help, protect our people.
Spend the rest of your life inspiring your friends, family, and community about how you fought anti-semitism by staying alive and joining the Jewish State.
Karl Rose, January 26, 2021 4:50 PM
Evil is on both sides of the political divide
Why is it, that my Jewish brothers on the left, think that its only on the right that all the anti Semitic yahoo's exist ???!!!!
Let's not forget that on the left, you have some of the biggest biased anti Semitic politicians, named. Omar, Talib and the rest of the squad and many blacks on the left that hate the Jewish people and say were occupiers of Palestine. When will you quit pointing at the right and realize the demons are right beside you.
Judy In Atlanta, January 27, 2021 3:38 AM

Thank you for pointing out the left has many haters. More Islamic haters of our people were elected in the last election, local and national, than ever in US history.

Aliyah is not for everyone
Not everyone can “sell everything” and move to Israel. For example, the writer is a social worker. Unless she is fluent in Hebrew, she may be unable to earn a living in Israel. Getting a professional license may be difficult too. A lot of Israelis are not thrilled with immigrants any more than Americans are. I am considering retiring to Israel, but we cannot leave my elderly in-laws. And I am not thrilled at the idea of living on another continent from my adult children, either.
(27) Jeffrey Bigman, January 26, 2021 4:31 PM

Saying anything at all in response to that is commendable. I felt your response was spot on to call out her callous unadulterated hate for what it is. Nothing else needed to be said.

Now it's known how people of color feel about racism.
I enjoyed your story. I hung on every word. Anti-semitism is very bad and painful. It's racism in its worse way. Now its known how people of color feel about prejudices and racism directed towards them simply because of the color of their skin.

Apology
I am so sorry you endured a person like that. When I watch a Holocaust story it is incomprehensible to me!! Know that there are people out there that love G-D’S chosen people. !!!
(23) David B, January 26, 2021 3:55 PM
We must be always vigilant and even call out our own
The son of Bibi Netanyahu used anti Semitic slurs against George Soros. The American Republican Jewish Coalition supported Donald Trump even though he aligned with neo-Nazis. 21% of US Jewish voters supported the Republican Party and Trump. For shame.
Yisroel, January 27, 2021 4:29 AM
The Charlottesville lie!
Please stop repeating the Charlottesville lie. The president did nit “align himself” with neo-Nazis. His was taken out of context even though he clearly disavowed the neo Nazis. How many times did the media and leftist politicians state the Charlottesville lie, knowing that THEY were lying. No different than what the NBC did with George Zimmerman’s 911 call when they cut out the middle, making it sound as though (without the questioning of the operator) he was racist.
There is a reason why we affirm that we are saying “the truth, the WHOLE truth....”
Anonymous, February 3, 2021 11:19 AM
Thank you for repeating that as necessary!
Also, calling Zimmerman half-white because of what he did, when he would have been Latino if he did something the left liked.
(22) Susan E Stein, January 26, 2021 3:48 PM
Heartfelt & beautifully written
This writer has a way of portraying her experience so that every emotion is carried to the reader. Her story is brave & sad & frightening. We are living in a in a time full of repititious negativity that must be confronted & dealt with at every turn. We must not forget. We must not be complacent. We saw this play out before & know how that ended. It must be stopped.
(21) Anonymous, January 26, 2021 3:41 PM
I agree
I had a former student I used to correspond with. He lives in Georgia and is very redneck, and believes this stuff. I told he to go fly a kite after the election and have no corresponding since. He is very pro nazi in his rhetoric and I just don't need that. We need to fight back against these people in more than talk. If we are talking the talk, time to walk the walk
(20) william mcgraw, January 26, 2021 3:40 PM
in plain view
This same scenario is playing out in plain view in the United States today. Trumpism is anti-semitism, anti-black, anti-immigrants working its way into our society, similar to the NAZI propaganda machine and as this young survivor's grandchild experienced, it is in plain view as it taken hold of white supremacists i.e. anti-semites in plain view.
Lenny, January 26, 2021 3:52 PM
Huh?
Right. It's not the leftist Israel haters, the Arabists in charge of the highest levels of the State Department, Nancy Pelosi, Al Sharpton, Rafael Warnock or any of that ilk that's the clear Anti-Semite. Sure, of course it's the President who has a Jewish son-in-law, Jewish daughter, Jewish grandchildren, who fulfilled the promise of many past Presidents by moving the Embassy to Jerusalem, who was responsible for four normalization/peace treaty agreements with governments previously hostile to Israel. Yeah, that's the Anti Semite. The problem with American Jews today is that they are once again blinded by the past. It is the Democrats who foster anti-semitic and anti-Israel behavior, not the Republicans. Are there evil on both sides? Of course- Jews will always be the outsiders to either side. But if you think the danger is mostly coming from the right wing neo Nazis and not left wing deniers of Israel's right to exist, then you'll miss the next Holocaust too.
Shelly, January 26, 2021 4:05 PM
Thank You
Thank you, Lenny. This needed to be said. I laugh at the fools who blame Trump for the anti semitism happening today in the great USA. The left wing are so blatantly anti Semitic. Shocking how people are so blind. Thanks for setting the record straight!
David B, January 26, 2021 6:38 PM
I call out antisemitism- left or right
You are apologizing for antisemitism by the GOP. To encourage antisemitism is beyond the pale. You support the blatant supporters of white supremacy and antisemitism.
By the way, the US Democratic Party has over 30 Congress members who are Jewish. The GOP? Maybe 1.
Ilhan Omar is against west bank settlements, she has not said anything antisemitic on the public record and has apologized for any confusion regarding past remarks, as had Tlaib. Please grow up.
Julie, January 26, 2021 6:53 PM
sad
Sadly, this is what liberals do. Paint with broad, severely over-extended brushes. Supporting the GOP does NOT mean apologizing for or encouraging antisemitism. Truly shame on you for twisting and misconstruing reality so terribly. The minute you don't agree with the twisted agenda of a liberal, they paint you as evil itself - and therefore you, and your opinions, don't - no, shouldn't - no, CAN'T - matter!
The Democratic party has Jewish congress members - many of whom are sadly bigger anti-Semites than many non-Jews. There is no bigger Jew hater than a self-hating Jew!
PLEASE, PLEASE read the comments of the squad with an open eye and mind. Most people are way too intelligent to fall for the half-baked, making things worse 'apologies' and statements that there was some 'mis-confusion' which they are forced to put out after they feel the heat for their despicable, inflammatory, inexcusable comments.
Anonymous, January 27, 2021 3:46 AM
Where do you get your information?
Where do you get your information - the media? The internet like Facebook)? Democrat talking points?
Many of the people who are in office that you count as Jewish were indeed born Jewish, so they are. However, for me, it is clear they have lost their way and worship a different G-d named government. They have become powerful and rich through their positions and have few accomplishments that have benefited anyone they are supposed to serve. Many Christians are greater supporters of Israel.
Anonymous, January 27, 2021 4:34 AM
Well said, Julie and anonymous.
Thank you, Julie and Anonymous, for responding to David as I had intended. Between the two of you, you covered every point.
David B, January 27, 2021 9:45 PM
Dear Anonymous
If a political party encourages inter-ethnic animosity, if it supports insurrection, and if it encourages xenophobia @mong its adherents, it is then a danger to Jewish minorities. Jewish people are safest in multicultural democracies that respect minority rights. The Republican Party of the US under Trump was a danger to those values, and Trump continues to promote anti-democratic values. The Democrats do not have authoritarian neo-fascists among its adherents, they believe in democracy and the expansion of American rights to all citizens.
Sorry, but moving the US embassy to Jerusalem was not worth putting democratic values at risk, it never will be. You supported incompetence, as I explained previously, had the US followed Canada’s approach to Covid, as it would have under responsible leadership, over 200,000 Americans would still be alive. Was that the price to move the embassy to Jerusalem? Or, did we need to add in creating orphans to pay the price you were willing to pay? Most Jewish Americans, 79% in fact, are not willing to pay that price. Younare wrong from that perspective. You are also wrong from a Canadian or Australian, or British perspective. You are sadly wrong and you support trouble. Again, go look at the website of the Conservative Party of Canada to understand hat responsible conservativism is. And yes, theynsupport Israel. They are just committed to democracy and can show you how you have gone wrong. I am not a conservative, but at least I can confidently say they know better than you guys about responsible democratic thought. Really. At this point Canadians would have to say you are willfully ignorant. That is a sin against your God-given intelligence.
Anonymous, February 3, 2021 11:26 AM
If a political party encourages inter-ethnic animosity, if it supports insurrection
The political party that has supported insurrection since 2016, and especially since 2020 with BLM, is the Democrats. The party that encourages inter-ethnic animosity, with obligatory CRT indoctrination and training, is the Democrats.

Tlaib is too fast for you
She already libeled Israel again for not vaccinating Palestinians and not caring if her poor old grandma dies.
Anonymous, January 26, 2021 6:53 PM
Right on!
A reality our people often overlook in condemning our former president and all Republicans. He who blesses Israel will be blessed. Trump was courageous in moving our embassy to Jerusalem.
David B, January 26, 2021 10:02 PM
Not so fast there
So, you target an unnamed Jewish member og Congress as a self-hating Jew and ignore the fact you supported a political party that aligns itself with anti-democratic forces that promote white supremacy. Your president and his relatives failed the US, not least because of their response to Covid. If the US behaved responsibly, it would have the same mortality rate as Canada. But it does not, that rate is 2.5X that of Canada per capita. That means over 250,000 Americans died because of who you supported, not 1x, but 2x.
You were silent when kids were taken from their parents at the border.
You voted for a party that said Canada was cheating the US.you allied with Putin before your allies.
Time to reflect on your choices because to most folks, they look like poor ones that are not democratic. To remind you, Jewish minorities are best off in countries that are democratic and not authoritarian. You really need to be lectured to because you do not seem to understand democracy and its value.
Anonymous, January 27, 2021 5:19 AM
Give Obama his 'due'
You mention that 'kids were taken from their parents at the border'. True, they were - at the behest of the Obama administration, who instituted this policy in recognition of the possibility that some of these children were not actually the offspring of the adults who brought them, but victims of white slavery. It's only when Trump continued this policy that the media jumped on it as some horrible plan to cruelly separate families because they are people of color, attempting to improve their lives by illegally breaking into another country. Amazing that they did not see this just months earlier when Obama was still in office!
David B, January 27, 2021 1:21 PM
Separating children from parents at the border
Is a crime. Deliberately losing information to reconnect those families is worse than a crime. Rod Rosenstein, the assistant AG who worked for Trump, even acknowledges it was wrong. Obama instituted the policy differently. However, whatever he did has nothing to do with committing immoral acts, it does not give you cover. Beside the fact that you are wrong, it is a coward’s argument to avoid moral approbation from wiser Canadians who are not part of your bubble mired in the history of your country that causes you to avoid moral resposibility for your actions and what you support.
Where was human history’s largest and most extensive slave society? When you have the ability to admit that, let’s talk. Until then, you make a lousy ally.
Anonymous, February 3, 2021 11:31 AM
Well, why was everyone including you silent when Obama did it?
That's the definition of hypocrisy. My guy did it? Must be ok. The other guy continues it? Crime against humanity!
Apart from that, the policy was not to put children in prison with adult lawbreakers, where there are many worse criminals than just people who entered illegally. I see nothing wrong with that, and apparently neither did Obama.
Nina Kotek, February 4, 2021 11:10 AM
Russia? Brazil? The Ottoman Empire?
Depends if you mean over the longest time, or biggest territory, or most people.

Democrat party is Authoritian.
In case you missed the lastest investigative report Anthony Fauchi research done in Wuhan China, even after Obama put a moratorium on "gain of function" virus research, apparently is the one that we are now having to deal with. He is a democrat.

Republicans or Republinazis
This is exactly what Jews face in the United States today. The Republican party has quietly nurtured Nazi sentiment for decades culminating in the rise of Trump who enabled and emboldened Nazi mentality. We have a long struggle ahead of us.

The Democrats are the most virulent anti-semites. Omar, AOC, Tlaib, Pelosi, Sharpton, Dinkens, DeBlasio, Warnock, Cuomo . I can keep going on and on. They are anti-semites. Anti-Police. Anti-Law and Order. Anti Religion. Anti-G-d. Anti-Morality. No Jew should support the Democratic party in any way.
This is what Lenny writes:

Thank you, Lenny & Shelly & Judy!
You have all hit the nail squarely on the head. Bravo!
Anonymous, January 27, 2021 3:50 AM
Who are you talking about?
Please don't say Trump. Refer to Lenny's statements, above.
Who is a white supremacist? I'm not.
Most of the Republican party are almost as Democrat as the Democrats. Very few stood with Trump after they were reelected. So, do you mean them? The ones that hate Trump, too?

VOTE
Here in the U.S., the Republican Party and conservatives in general have pushed us closer and closer to fascism. We must hold Republicans accountable for this. Vote in every election. Vote against fascism.
Anonymous, January 26, 2021 4:46 PM
Yes, Vote. Vote Republican. Republican is NOT facism. Don't believe that lie.
I am the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. My father, is the son of Holocaust survivors. Now that Biden has won and the Democrats are in charge, he has applied to emigrate to Israel even though his entire life and extended family is here. That's how scared he is of anti-Semitism in the Democratic party. Does that say anything to you??
Conservatism is not Facism. That is a big lie that the Democrats would love for you to believe. Is there a small group of Facists on the fringe of the Republican party - perhaps. But the vast, vast majority of the party has nothing to do with that and rejects that. I'll take the Republican party overall any day over the anti-G-d, anti-religion, anti-morality, anti-law and order, anti-police, anti-Semitic Democratic party.

They hated Trump because he was pro-Religion, pro-Israel, pro-G-d, pro-morality, anti-murdering babies as they are being born(!). That is the truth.
Please read Lenny's Comment above

Republican Party of USA = white supremacists
Please review the website of the Canadian Conservative Party to understand what a proper conservative political party is in a successful heterogeneous democracy.
You should know better and now you have a model of responsible conservativism.
Judy, January 26, 2021 6:20 PM
truth
The Republican party is not perfect. There is a fringe element (minority) that are white supremacists but most intelligent people realize that 74 million Americans are NOT all White Supremacists. Most people realize not to paint the whole party based on a few fringe extremists.
Over all, I'd support a pro-Religion, pro-morality, pro-law and order, anti-murdering-babies party over a deceitful, self-serving, hypocritical, anti-religious, anti-law and order, anti-morality, socialist, anti-Semitist, 'progressive' party ANY day.
(Which party produced a President who handed over BILLIONS of US tax payer's money in pallets of CASH to a country that calls for the death of USA AND ISRAEL??)
Anonymous, January 27, 2021 3:53 AM
You are correct!!
Fantastic comments, Judy!
Amazingly well put!
Rachel, January 26, 2021 10:08 PM
Please respect different viewpoints
My in-laws are survivors and did not vote for Trump. One is completely apolitical. The other is understandably most concerned about Covid19. President Biden is pro-Israel. I understand and respect others’ perspectives and political choices. I am tired of reading screeds about evil liberals on Aish. I am a liberal Democrat and an Orthodox Jew. From my perspective, the Democratic Party cares more about ordinary people, and the GOP is pro-business and pro-Evangelical. But I respect those who disagree with my opinion, or who think a strong economy is most important. I hate anti-Semites, racists, misogynists and Homophobes. I do not hate other Jews.
Nancy, January 28, 2021 4:23 PM
I too am tired of reading about "the evil liberals"
I always appreciate a lively discussion. However, name calling is what keeps us divided as a nation. Someone made a comment about having a politician be pro-morality. Who on this site ISN'T? !
Anonymous, January 26, 2021 10:55 PM
Lenny tells it like it is
I agree with everything you say. American Jews are blinded. Why so many are Democrats, I could never understand. The Democratic Party is not like the old Democratic Party. There are plenty of Jews in that party that are “self hating “ Jews. We are one Jewish family that voted for Trump

Confused
I don’t understand why a Nazi sympathizer would be working in a Jewish Museum? Did I miss something here?
Shelly, January 26, 2021 4:07 PM
Museum
The author never said it was a Jewish museum.
Anonymous, January 28, 2021 9:01 AM
It was a private military museum
The museum was clearly not a Jewish museum. It was a privately owned military museum.

Anti-Semitism has become a phrase
Dear Aish Family, The phrase Anti-Semitism has become, for lack of a better term, too mainstream or common. It sounds sophisticated and educated but lacks clarity and gut wrenching truth. Jew Hatred is exactly what it is. You rarely, if ever hear the term Pro-Semitism. It is baseless hatred. Call it what it is. I have seen it in another headline on your site just today. Perhaps a stronger word would cause someone to pause and rethink their thoughts and actions. With Love And Respect, Lou

Head in the Sand
Very worrying but American Jewish community is ignoring some serious symptoms from the left and right concerning anti-semitism. Beware.
(13) Brian Bertram, January 26, 2021 3:13 PM
Alive but not well
If attention is being paid to what is being said today in America you will here echos of joseph Goebbels. The same tactics being used as the Nazis. Don't believe the Nazis lives in tall blue eyed athletic individuals. That evil was passed from the ss to anyone that will follow....no matter what they look like. People believe anything if " you say it loud enough and long enough". Confront it!
(12) Lisa, January 26, 2021 3:02 PM
I frequently visit Georgia.... where is this museum?
I would have definitely froze if I were in that museum!! Esav soneh et Yaakov.... there will always be those who hate us just bc we exist!! But to come face to face with hate... I don’t know what I would have done!! Where is this ? In Atlanta?
(11) Harry Engel, January 26, 2021 3:01 PM
Sorry for the incident in which you became enmeshed
Obviously, you did not expect the situation to occur. I believe you did well in stating, out loud, to the owner's wife, how your attitude greatly differed from that of the owner's wife's attitude. But, still sad that you had to experience this in the United States and within the supposed "warm hospitality of the south". Her looking left and right tells me that she knew that others within earshot would disapprove of her attitude towards the wallet and its contents. An unasked-for thought for you: Should there be a "next time", perhaps you will have "trained" yourself to act differently.............calmly asking the person why they feel the way they state and calmly asking the person how they would feel if it was their family that suffered at the hands of what those soldiers represented. That "guilt trip message" might convince the person to re-think their own attitude. Maybe it would not convince them....but it may be worth a try. Please be well and thank you for sharing your unfortunate story.

Ignore at your own peril
Antisemitism is like a wave. We have been in the trough for a few decades in the US but clearly we are heading towards the crest. As a people we have experienced many slaughters. Never have we had the opportunity to have weapons capable of defending ourselves. I am surprised how so many Jews are repulsed when I tell them that I have guns for self defense. Not from burglary or other crime but for the day when another slaughter of our people is approaching. We leave ourselves defenseless over and over again and I wonder why.
(9) Anonymous, January 26, 2021 2:51 PM
Why have you continually supported the neo-nazis of the Rebublican Party. By doing this you have put many people in harms way and threatened our democracy. It's about time you wake up and fight!
Losing our republic is still a possibility because many Jews supported the White Supremicist Movement under the Trump banner. All of you who did should hang your heads in shame and stop it at once before G-d forbid another Holocaust!
Gary Colwill, January 26, 2021 3:25 PM
Do Tell
Please give details.
David B, January 26, 2021 4:56 PM
Give proof wants the Republican
Just look at what Trump said, who his followers are, and the statistically provable fact that acts of antisemitism have increased in the past 4 years.
And you gave it cover.
Anonymous, February 3, 2021 11:39 AM
Acts of antisemitism have increased
Let's subtract the over 100 hoax calls, because they were from a disturbed Israeli kid. Then we are left with crazy extremist rightist shootings, and crazy black antisemitic shootings and violence in New York from blacks and vandalism and tagging by Nazis. Pretty balanced, so what was your point about Trump?
(8) Cee, January 26, 2021 2:30 PM
You Did Say Enough
Kol Hakavod. You did respond appropriately. She looked at your blue eyes and blond hair and thought you were one of them. You taught her differently. Plenty of other people would have smiled politely and left. You did good.
(7) Ira a Einhorn, January 26, 2021 2:26 PM
Question
Can you give me the name of the museum?
Fred M Kramer, January 26, 2021 3:06 PM
I knew an "Ira Einhorn" while living in hollywood florida, many years ago. Please forgive me if I have reached the wrong "IRA". Do you remember "Wolfies Restaurant" ?
Shelly, January 26, 2021 4:12 PM
Name of Museum
I was hoping the author would at the very least let us know the name of the museum. If she is going to remain a passive sheep going to slaughter, that’s her right. But others have a right to know the name of the establishment so that we can inform others. WHY SO PASSIVE?!?!
(6) Howard FLOCH, January 26, 2021 2:24 PM
always remember
Thank you for telling us all and standing up to the Nazi. WE MUST NEVER FORGET!

Unspeakable pain handled so well.
(4) Aviel, January 26, 2021 9:23 AM
wake up and face the truth
first of all most german soldiers were not nazis. regular army fighters were similar to any military draftees fighting for their country. secondly antisemitism was so ingrained inti the culture by the time the war began that few Germans even questioned it during the war. the sick joke about the British definition of antisemetism being hating Jews more than necessary was the norm. If one thinks America or any other place is a safe haven for Jews they are deluded.Yes, assimilation usually works so if giving up your Judasim and ending the line with you is no problem then can choose to stay in galus, If not get yourself or at least your kids to your homeland ertez Yisrael and maybe write and thank this nazi sympathizer for the needed push

Excellent article!
My dear sister in law has again showed us how it is posisible to think on ones feet even in a situation one could not possibly have foreseen, and with Hashem’s help, express clearly and firmly the correct reaction. The understatement of her reaction, moreover, which she regrets, actually lends more weight to her remarks than seething expressions of rage. More strength to her elbow!!

Georgia Got It's First Jewish Senator
There is still hope.
Anonymous, January 27, 2021 4:04 AM
Just because he is Jewish
Doesn't mean he supports Israel. He has very few accomplishments in his life, except marrying a doctor. His campaign ads were all fluff.
He will go along with whatever the ice cream lady (aka speaker of the house) says.
(1) Susan Libby, January 25, 2021 2:20 PM
Had similar experiences mostly rural areas
It is really the same old story. In most urban areas Jews and Gentiles are more well integrated. In the South and in many rural areas very many people have simply not been exposed to enough Jews ( or pick any ethnicity) to see us as fellow human beings. I ran into such ignorance several times while living in rural upstate Wisconsin. Good for you for speaking up. And no, saying more would not have any further effect on that woman.
Anonymous, January 26, 2021 2:33 PM
NYC
Please explain the rise in antisemetic attacks in NYC. This is ridiculous. I grew up in rural America and have been to many rural places; while many people have not met or talked with Jews it provides great opportunities for discussion. I never once had an antisemitic incident.
