Anti-Semitism creeping in..

It seems to me that anti-Semitism has been creeping in right and left & I feel it has been happening in such a way until we are powerless against it. Yes this was dealt with, but why did it happen in the first place? The teacher is responsible for a lesson plan and in that they are required to know the material being taught. That teacher should be suspended for influencing a group of children with hate rhetoric and the teacher should also be re-educated because clearly that person has a position afforded to them that they do not deserve. I have suffered from anti-Semitism and each time, I was not sure how to respond when it has happened to me as it was almost surreal that it was happening. One time in particular when I was harassed and called names by a big guy, I believe if I had been a man, I would have been roughed up. I don't know how it happens, but I do know that the person who perpetuates it is usually full of hatred. Many of the young people today have unfortunately literally been brainwashed into a liberal mindset in school and an anti-Israel viewpoint. This has been something I have personally experienced on a college campus and on my Facebook page by young people when I express pro-Israel sentiment. They seem to spew lies and things they think are facts, yet they are far from the truth. I think we need to wake up because I have had a gut feeling that this is only going to get worse.. I pray I am wrong but let us not be unwise of the signs..

It's incredible how many are jumping on the censorship bandwagon for a video presentation they haven't even seen.

And the context of the presentation was not described. Were the students allowed to discuss/critique the video afterwards? That's a principle method for learning. If students are insulated from objectional material in school, how will they handle it when they're adults, and they're on their own?

Regarding the comment by Anonymous #8: "As far as I know this behavior is as illegal as flaunting communism." Is that illegal? Was the Constitution of the U.S. rescinded last night? :)

I'm with you David

Without more facts, it's not really possible to address the appropriate response. Often today, schools procure materials based on a summary, and all teachers of the subject are provided with the materials and required to use them. Because this happened in Rockland Co, there was an immediate public response. What happens when it's shown in an inner city or rural area.
Producers of educational materials are in a for profit business. That's why some textbooks gloss over the facts about the slave trade, or include as much information about creationism as about evolution.

I believe i saw that film on TV 2 months ago.

Or, if not that exact film, another one very similar. It was on the local "Faith" channel, in the mid-sized Canadian city where I live. Was channel-surfing & just happened to hit upon it. Out of curiosity, I watched the program--with increasing disgust--to the end. And finally, as the credits rolled down the screen, the announcer's voice said...."You have just been watching The Islamic Hour. Please join us next week for the conclusion of this episode."

We need more facts

We need more facts about this.

I don't know where the world is going. So many people care about the rights of animals. But an antisemitic video is shown in a school. I was even more shocked when I heard this happened in the New York area.

I can't imagine being surprised, and am years past being upset.

This is a big deal only to the very naive or overprotected. Anyone who is truly upset at this has been living in a cocoon, with limited sensory input. These kids, as were their parents and teachers, are taught learn to have contempt and dislike for Jews in their homes and communities, including their schools. The video is not very important, the Sunday sermons are maybe more important.
I am convinced there are many civil, decent, and honorable Christian citizens all over our great country, even in New York, and I was raised to see the good in every person, but I learned very quickly not to be shocked when that attitude is not reciprocated.

Apology certainly is not enough

As far as I know this behavior is as illegal as flaunting communism.. The person who brought this to the school should be taken to court for spreading hatred in a School in a country that's supposed to abhor hatred ( in this case " freedom of speech" should not apply)he should be investigated to see what other things he is teaching his students ( or other illegal activities) and fired ( or jailed) AND the film should be banned. So, how do we make such a petition?

What was the name of the film, who was the producer, how did did it happen to come to the attention of the teacher

What was the name of the film? Who was the producer? How did did it happen to come to the attention of the teacher? Why did the teacher not chose to show it, or why did the teacher chose to show it? What of the rest of the curriculum in that class, or by the teacher? Are there other schools that are using this material?

A counter film

I agree that apology is not enough. Perhaps the school should allow a speaker to give a lesson that shows how films like that are what led to the holocaust. Then back up truth with a film that sheds light and counteracts the damaging lies of the anti-Semitic film and other misconceptions.

armour against the antisemitism of real life

I remember being taken as a school group to a church to watch a film about the benefits of being a Catholic, I was 10 years old. It offended me; but no amount of protest to my teacher would permit me to leave the room. There were only 7 Jewish students in the entire school; I will never forget who I am and who they are!

Seems thevprice for living in galut

At least an apology was given. Given the history of life in galut that won't always be the case. I think the USA has been great for many people including Jews but it seems to me it's clearly time for Jewx to come home and if a video can be enough of a wake up for anyone it's a small price

Lisa, February 7, 2016 8:44 PM

So true!

Our welcome in the US has ended!!

Rachel, February 12, 2016 6:18 AM

No it hasn't

When hate crimes against Jews occur, they are prosecuted. In this case, the school apologized. Jews work in every profession and trade. We can freely practice our religion. Yes, we're in galut, but please don't libel the government and majority of the American people.

Rockland County AKA: Monsey, NY

Yes, this took place only a few towns over from Monsey, NY, which is mostly populated with religious Jews. This video does not surprise me. I'm pleasantly shocked that there aren't more of these slanted videos these days. I don't think we are going to get more than an apology from the school. Should we push for more than that? Then I think of the school in rural Alabama who made a Holocaust themed movie, Paperclips. Y'all would think NY would know better than the folks way Down South!!

(2) Nancy, February 7, 2016 12:44 PM

Yes, DEFINITELY show them a pro-Jewish film!

As egregious as this action was, I don't think anyone should experience job loss. However, I DO think the responsible party(ies) should be suspended without pay for a few days. A certain person and/or people was/were asleep at the wheel. They need to face the consequences of their actions.

(1) Jewish Mom, February 7, 2016 9:24 AM

Show them a pro-Jewish film!

Booting people from their jobs won't reverse the negative message that the students absorbed - it will just reinforce that "Jews control the world and know how to make noise when you insult them." I'm not saying that they shouldn't be fired to prevent them from spreading their anti-Semitic poison, but the impressionable teenagers need to be given a different, more accurate picture of Jews to undo the damage. If the producers have produce films with fair portrayals, show those films or others - give them a corrective emotional experience.
