This app monitors YOU, not your friends. It doesn't tell you anything about your friends, but it does tell you something about YOURSELF. What it can help you do is to realize when certain people/situations make you nervous, so you can figure out why and FIX YOUSELF, rather than ditch your friend.

that app could become a sort of lashon hara

I suppose this app could become a source of automated lashon hara.

It tells you what you (supposedly!) feel - with room for misinterpretation of course
but even if it tells correctly what you feel,
the purpose of the machine is to let you know who your friends are, in other words, what THEY think about YOU.

The machine can not possibly know that. It can at best know what you think that others think.

If I remember correctly, in the Torah the spies said "We were like grasshoppers in their [the inhabitants of the Land of Israel at the time] eyes."

A commentary was that it is one thing to say "We were like grasshoppers in OUR eyes", and it may be legitimate and beneficial to become clear about ones thoughts,
but it is a completely different matter to assume that this is what OTHER people think about one.

So I suppose the great fault of the machine is that it conflates what you MIGHT feel with what others truly think, and it can become a huge lashon hara and it may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
It may well exaggerate patterns of behavior that are not helpful to the person.

Particularly dangerous with those who have social anxiety!

on the spectrum

I wonder if this would have positive application for those who have difficulty reading social cues?

What about the Sabbath?

Rabbi I agree with you.
I guess those of us who are observe the Orthodox Jewish Sabbath strictly are out of luck as far as sizing up new people on that holy day!
I usually am not sarcastic but this APP takes the cake.

It won't stop there...

Just wait. Soon they'll come up with an app that reads minds and tells you what the person you're talking to REALLY thinks about you!
