A note from Yaakov Salomon

Some viewers/readers have expressed disappointment that my segment on Jorel's Bar Mitzvah video invitation was excessively harsh. I recognize that it can be seen that way. I apologize if anyone's feelings were hurt or if it seemed to disparage this young man's character. That was certainly not my intent. I made a realistic inference that if his video (with a particularly offensive toilet scene) was any indication of his Bar Mitzvah plans, it would be a poor example of what that celebration should look like. Apparently and thankfully, as his loving grandmother pointed put, that was not the case. I have only good wishes for the youngster and look forward to his wedding video invitation (if I am invited).

Looks like another situation of 'more bar than mitzva'!

Listen, we live in a hedonistic society where people do what 'feels' good at the time and don't give any real thought to meaning or consequences. This just seems par for the course.

I think the Rabbi has it right... No If, and's or Buts.

The Rabbi is reaching out and sharing a life lesson. One that this boy should learn and can only benefit from.

Well said , Rabbi

Hope this gets at least as many hits as Jorel's

Salomon Slips

Rabbi Salomon:

Your are truly a giant who has learned from giants. but.

Oy Vey.

Go find someone your own stature to name and pick on. Standing on the shoulders of a real 12 yr old kid to make a broader point is very not like you.

I see his Bubie has already felt the need to jump to his defence in the comments above so - nuff said.

Three Cheers for Jorel

Rabbi, while I appreciate the message you delivered here, it made me sad that your positive words for Jorel were followed by a "but..." How about an "and..." instead? When I watched Jorel's video, I immediately thought about Adam Sandler's Chanukah Song. Jorel just made bar mitzvah and Judaism cool for a whole lot of Jewish kids who have been luke warm about their Judaism. He did a service for our community. Oh, about your "but..." This was just an invitation. Something tells me that any family that will take an invitation to such lengths is probably taking the rest of the preparation to similar, albeit unvideod, lengths. I bet his mitzvah project rocks too! You Go Jorel!

Jorel's Bar Mitzvah video

Dear Rabbi Salomon,
Thank you so much for your comments about our grandson's Bar Mitzvah invitation. It was only intended to be seen by the invited guests, all friends and family, who would understand the tongue in cheek nature of the video (the toilet scene is a parody of the Gangnam Style video BTW). Although it's evident Jorel likes to have fun, he is a thoughtful young man who is taking the responsibility of his Bar Mitzvah very seriously. He will be honouring the life of Lazos Izrael, a young Romanian boy who died in Auschwitz at 6 years old. He has been doing research about the Holocaust and will be speaking about the importance of keeping the memory alive of those who's lives were so tragically cut short. (Habonim was founded by Holocaust survivors).
In addition, Jorel has been able to keep all the media attention he received in perspective, enjoying the fun of it, but not letting it go to his head. He's a delightful person and we're all extremely proud of him.

No 13 year old ponders the meaning of life.....

Even the "frum" sometimes just have fun.....obviously he's not a true Torah observant Jew yet....at least he is ear marking the day as a being Bar Mitzvaed....I think we would be surprised to uncover what some of our now respected Rabbi's did many years ago at their Bar Mitzva celebrations!! It's not over for Justin yet......he actually might be Reb Yehuda one day.....!!

Got his name wrong.....

Sorry Jorel....I called you Justin Hope your Bar Mitzva day will be meaningful!!
