On this date in 1187, the Battle of Hittin was fought near Tiberias, Israel, between Sultan Saladin's Muslim army and Christian Crusaders. The Crusaders were blinded by smoke from fires set by Saladin's forces, who then wiped out nearly 20,000 Crusader troops to become the eminent military power in the Holy Land. A few months later, upon capturing Jerusalem, Saladin invited the Jews to resettle their Holy City.
